So the other day I was perusing Atlantic Monthly and I ran across an interesting article. It's interesting because it happens to be about the life of a computer owner! I find that interesting because one day in, perhaps, 1984 I'm thinking of investing about $4000 in a futureproof machine not only capable of regular computing, but also WORDPROCESSING (don't cream yourselves yet (if you know what that is)).

Anyway, I'm very excited about the fact that computers will shortly become a consumer good (Apparantely I can buy a basic business computer for just a few thousand $$$S!). Whilst I'm sure they won't catch on with the mainstream, I think there will at least be a niche market which a few of the posters on this board will invest in to. The 'computer' certainly won't be for everyone but, I suspect (And slap me with a haddock in five years if I'm wrong) it might catch on in the future.

Anyway, here's a link to an article by a happy customer who bought an awesome bitch-kickin system in 1979 (though regrets he didn't buy a larger 8" disk drive) and his adventures with it up until the 1984 or so article. The dude writes so well I'm kind of excited about the capabilities of his machine until.. well.. I realise that the capabilities are more limited by me than the machine.

PS I had a daisywheel printer back in the day.. do you could reckon I could maybe get.. say.. $750 for it now?

DOH! I meant to post this on Compuserve 24 years ago, but I forgot. Ah well. I'm saving up my post about the 'internet' (you're gonna like this baby!) for another 10 years or so.

that's all very well and good, but what's gonna happen to your pride investment in the year 2000, my friend?

The best-known small computer is probably the Apple. Because there are so many Apples in circulation, and because the company has pushed software so aggressively, you can get a wider variety of programs and accessories for an Apple than for any other system.

How times change.
