Christians Denounce TV Program for Humanizing Jesus

A television documentary depicting Jesus as a human is drawing sharp criticism from Christian circles.

While Christian leaders have called for the cancellation of the program, the TV network's union has vowed to continue the broadcast.

...

They said statements in the program saying Jesus was not God but rather a very good human political leader were quite well known and frequently talked about in other countries and among academics.

...

While some Christians state that every word in the Bible is a fact and should be believed, the program looks at the possibility of the book being a fable, a composition of metaphors picturing a better society many people dream of.

...

The controversial first airing saw a 10.6 percent viewing rate. The remaining three episodes will be aired each Sunday at 11:20 p.m.

Hebrew tablet suggests tradition of resurrected messiah predates Jesus

A 3-foot-tall tablet with 87 lines of Hebrew that scholars believe dates from the decades just before the birth of Jesus is causing a quiet stir in biblical and archaeological circles, especially because it may speak of a messiah who will rise from the dead after three days.

If such a messianic description really is there, it will contribute to a developing re-evaluation of both popular and scholarly views of Jesus, because it suggests that the story of his death and resurrection was not unique but part of a recognized Jewish tradition at the time.

...

"Some Christians will find it shocking - a challenge to the uniqueness of their theology - while others will be comforted by the idea of it being a traditional part of Judaism," Boyarin said.

Both articles are asinine.

For the first one: Jesus fucking WAS human. Even if you take the Bible completely literally, he was half human and half divine.

For the second: If you study history, it's pretty common knowledge that Jesus was only a newer incarnation of a figure that had been around for centuries before (in both Rome and Persia).

Neither article is saying anything that hasn't been said before.

No it doesn't. Indeed, it is an event and current. Hrm. Now if there was a forum devoted to events that are current or current events... oh wait! You're not even a good arm chair mod.

It's about Korea. It goes here.

Christianity in Korea is a cargo cult. Once I heard a Korean columnist note that Korea is not a christian nation like the USA and Korean christians are going to have to deal with that.

(Of course the USA is not a christian nation.)

Just discussing Christianity implies that it is somehow based upon any form of reality whatsoever and has some form of importance.

Religion sucks.

Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. When will people finally give up this Apollo worship crap. The values which sprang out of the original 'Jesus movement' have done much to improve the human condition. However, much of that good gets negated by people who can't let go of the whole supernatural sales pitch. It's a myth. Don't even get me started on the Middle Eastern copy cat version. Good for you SBS.

Muslims have been saying it forever. I don't think any educated Christian would give two sh*ts about whether or not the secular world says Jesus was not divine and the world was not created. People who don't believe in the spiritual or divine aren't going to change their minds whether the show airs or not. What are those religious zealots going to do when science and anti-theism inevitably leads to extreme persecution, segregation and murder of believers again? Most Christians believe it's going to happen again anyway. If they would just stay pacifistic and not try to mix their religious values with the outside world, everyone would pretty much leave them alone!

I don't think christians invented being nice to each other. I think the worshipers of apollo and a thousand other gods have always used their god as the reason why we should be nice to each other.
