In the middle of the article it says that a passenger terminal will be built that will turn Seoul into a global hub etc.... and attract more tourists.

Interesting thought however.

Although I'm very critical of the 2MB's "abandoned" Grand Canal plan to link up all of South Korea's major rivers into one single grand canal network, the Seoul-Incheon canal plan is not quite as stupid.

Seoul could benefit from an alternative shipping access route such as the Gyeongjin canal, as the mouth of the Han river is very close to the DMZ. Having said that, the idea that it's going to lead to a tourism boom strikes me as a bit overly optimistic, and many fear that 2MB's going to use finishing this canal as an excuse to push on with the entire Grand Canal plan.

On a selfish level I would LOVE for the canal to happen. Most canals in this region also have bike/pedestrian paths attached. From Incheon to Seoul by bike is arduous and dangerous at times.

Is it good for tourism? I highly doubt it but right now terms like tourism and Green/sustainable are popular phrases and elicit positive responses when trying to build allies with money or political clout.

The Koreans might surprise people on this one. It could turn out to be a great idea.

I'm all for bikepaths and other similar improvements, and I generally love what Seoul city hall has done with the Han river and tributaries over the last decade, but they can easily put paths beside rivers and streams without having to stuff up the river systems.

Check out this link to see how bad the Grand Canal project is:

I'm probably guilty of looking like I'm pro-canal when I'm simply Pro-bike and pedestrian access. I don't know enough about the Incheon canal to form an opinion. I understand some of it is already completed thus it could be done in just a few years. I doubt that reclaiming the begining of the canal would be less of an impact. The canal system that covers the entire country does seem like a bad move, really bad.

Don't worry Crockpot, I know you're not the kind of guy who wants to bulldozer everything. Making any progress with setting up more trails near Songdo?

You know what that biggest unseen hurdle has turned out to be? The economy. My alies are drying up and going home which gives me very little ammo. I won't say it's a dead project but it sure lost momentum. Bummer since it was chocked full of volunteers, engineers, and WAS well funded.
