A new variety of cute, cuddly, breathing tots may be the most lifelike dolls ever - and some people are worried they may be a little too real.
The handmade dolls, known as "reborn babies," are sparking controversy because some of their buyers are bereaved parents, looking to feel something of what they lost.
The online community of enthusiasts who make and collect the dolls have grown hesitant to speak about their hobby, discouraged by the media's portrayal of the dolls as macabre.
The London department store Harrods won't stock the dolls because they are too lifelike, according to Reuters.
"Reborn babies" are created from vinyl, mohair, and multiple layers of paint that convey the look of a newborn's mottled skin. They're not a brand, but rather a movement.
Makers of the dolls, who call their hobby "reborning," are constantly improving the toys' design to make the dolls even more realistic. They've weighted the "babies" to feel like actual infants, and added electronic devices to simulate breathing and chest movement.
One reborning site calls the unusal dolls "cuddle therapy," but that hasn't stopped the toy industry from turning away from the trend.
As toy making techniques have improved over time, playthings have become more and more realistic. The shelves of FAO Schwartz are lined with American Kennel Club stuffed dogs that accurately portray the features of countless breeds, as well as Lee Middleton Original Dolls, which capture the distinctive facial expressions of babies.
But with "reborn babies," the true-to-life look and feel of the dolls opens the door for uses that some find questionable. One mother of two told Reuters, "My daughter wanted a sibling and I didn't want to have any more children, so I made her a doll instead."
Others feel the dolls have legitimate therapeutic uses. Ian James, a doctor at the Centre for the Health of the Elderly at Newcastle General Hospital in the U.K., said that holding the dolls helps calm elderly residents, helping them feel peaceful and quiet. |

I wonder how much it costs, 4,000 dollars? Probably. More money than brains club. |

I can see the boys from CKY and Jackass having some extremely funny and immoral pranks with one of those. |
