don't know about the one in Guro but I DID interview for one in Daejeon and after some questioning - it turned out the new hakwon owner had NEVER managed a hakwon before and NEVER been involved with E teaching on ANY level whatsoever.
both her and her husband were univ professors changing careers to manage an E hakwon - I don't recall their subject specialties but it wasn't even close to E - in fact, she didn't speak E very well but required a translator at our interview.
the person who sent me there was a long-time Jung Chul hakwon owner here in Seoul - and he had told me both her and her husband had OWNED AND OPERATED a hakwon before - an out and out lie.
when I confronted the new hakwon owner about this discrepancy at the interview she said "something must have been lost in the translation" but the guy in Seoul was quite fluent - he understood perfectly what I was asking (regarding their experience considering this was a brand-new not open yet hakwon).
I said never mind, it doesn't matter, the fact is I would never work for someone who had no experience in E education.
SO what you need to find out is how much experience does your hakwon owner have ? in detail? because apparently Jung Chul will open hakwons for anyone w/the funds regardless of their experience or background in E education.
hope this helps. let us know. |

Though I appreciate the effort, it does not really help in regards to the specific school in question. But, I will keep your points in mind.
sigh............I can't get over my sense of paranoia in regards to accpeting any position. With my history in Korea, I need the right school. Yes, I know the public schools are out there, but I'm just not good at being the human tape recorder in front of 35-40 kids, while not having any help or support from the K-teacher.
Seriously, it seems many private schools don't have the "normal" package anymore.
1. 6 hours a day (I don't have a problem being at the school a normal for a normal 8 hour working day, mind you).
2. 2.2-2.3 million won per month.
3. 10 WORKING days of personal vacation....(5 days in summer and five days in winter................always trickery with this).
4. Decent housing.
5. Freedom to teach, not run through 6-8 pages everyday just for the sake of giving the parents the impression their precious ones are learning English.
6. Pension
7. Insurance
I know the jobs are out there, but as I said.......I've got a little bit of paranoia about it.

I'm sorry - I didn't mention the Jung Chul curriculum because I thought you knew already - ?
it's quite pre-ordained - they have their own books and insist you cover exactly what they specify, number of pages, etc.
there are also mandatory teacher training events one must attend - some on Saturdays of course!!
I looked at the books and they may not be that bad, but I balk at someone insisting I cover certain pages in x amount of time regardless of students' abilities.
they are very much a "canned" hakwon - meaning they expect to control everything for maximum profit and are sprouting up everywhere. maybe some of them work but I think you'll have to interview the people you'll be working w/ in a thorough manner to get the gist of how it's working there.
if you search back around summer of 2007 I think there were some threads here on Jung Chul.
good luck anyway. |
