The other day I was waiting for a bus at a stop that happened to be near a crosswalk. There were school kids ahead of me walking through the intersection as the little green walk-guy gave them permission. A car then blows through its red light, barely swerves for the kids and then slams on the brakes as I hold out my cell phone like I'm taking his picture. He then proceeded with caution after looking all around. I already had my phone out to check the time. I was a bit stunned by his immediate rxn. I've done it a few times since (there are too many opportunities as we all know) and it has worked like a charm. I am not sure if it's that they are worried about my sending in the pics or if they are freaked out by a 6'5" dude holding out something in such a conspicuous fashion. Regardless, it has worked well.

I think I'll sign up for that Tae Kwan Do class now.

Just like catching a kid stealing from the candy store.

People used to make money doing just what you did. Maybe they still do, I dunno.

I don't think so. Many of the so-called "car-parazzi" would manufacture situations that would allow them to get pics of you breaking one law or another. They were becoming more a hindrance than a help.

This country is a disgrace as far as drivers go.

They basically all just speed right up to crosswalks or go right around corners with no regard for safety.

When I was in Japan, I couldn't believe how courteous the drivers were.

One of my pet peeves here are taxis that stop half-way through a crosswalk. I just want to walk right over their hoods.

What inconsiderate fools when behind the wheel. They'll kill you if you're in the way. No bones about it. It's like a jungle, if you can't walk fast enough or stay out of the way, you're dead. This is how a society like this efficiently operates as to weed out those who have gotten too slow and weak. It's not intentional nor hateful, it's just an automatic instinct of life. Sometimes children inadvertently die as a result of such carelessness since they're smaller and slower.

Seriously? I know three people who got hit by cars in Japan by drivers who ran red lights. I myself had a driver slam on his brakes as I was biking through a crosswalk because he failed to stop when he should have. I fell off my bike trying to get out of the way.

Yesterfday alone, on a twenty minute bus ride, I saw a Matiz, a SM5 and a Bongo truck all pull out in front of or otherwise cut of our bus. The Bongo passed us on the left two seconds before making a right turn in front of us. Then to top it off we passed first one, then another scooter/car accident. The first one looked like the car had pulled a U turn in front of the scooter.

there are the odd crazy drivers in japan but for the most part they're annoyingly polite, to the point of never doing anything even slightly aggressive... which can be annoying if you're 1. a good driver 2. in a hurry.

In my city, Jeonju, public busses blow through red lights all the time. I have seen drivers pull onto the sidewalk to get around people... Literally driving on the sidewalk... I heard that when the bus driver's association went on strike, they started following traffic laws instead of breaking them. Go figure.

In the US we are all stocked up with apethy but it just blows my mind that something such as this does not seem to elicit a rased eyebrow by the general public in Korea. I would NOT want to meet the mother of a New Jersey kid after I drove a bus through an intersection with the kid there.

Is there some thought that when it is YOU riding the bus or driving that it will help you in some way to be able to ingnore common traffic laws?

It's called work to rule. Following the rules TO THE LETTER, which usually results in delays and such which then pisses off the public who then complain to hopefully put pressure on management to wrap up the strike quickly. The Seoul subway drivers did the same thing. They would come in to a station, open the doors for exactly so many seconds, and leave the station after exactly so many more seconds (EXACTLY as outlined in their policy books)... travel times were more than doubled and people were screaming for the strike to finish.

Yeah. Seriously. You can pick isolated incidents if you want, but that does not negate what I've said. It's pretty obvious they're really bad here. Japan's civilized in these matters.
