Starting next March, travelers heading to Taipei's Songshan Airport will be able to save some time by catching flights from Seoul's Gimpo Airport instead of heading out to Incheon.
Korea and Taiwan finally signed an aviation pact negotiating the direct flight service late last week, reported the Taipei Times.
The new flights are presumably for travelers looking to cut down travel time by avoiding each country's main international airports.
As part of Taiwanese president Ma Ying-jeou's "Golden Aviation Circle in Northeast Asia" campaign to connect Taipei to major cities in Asia, the new pact means Songshan and Gimpo airports will be implementing a maximum of seven direct flights per week.
As part of the same Golden Circle campaign, flight services between Songshan airport and Tokyo's Haneda airport resumed for the first time in 32 years in November 2010.
The flight capacities for Taoyuan and Incheon airports have also been extended from 4,500 seats to 5,500 seats per week.
According to Taiwan's Ministry of Transportation and Communications, Taiwan received 216,900 visitors from Korea last year, a 30 percent increase from 2009, while Korea saw 406,300 visitors in 2010, a seven percent increase from two years ago.
