Hey people,
I'm sure that many of my fellow Canadians in Korea have Canada student loans. Well, I just want to warn people of a certain situation that could arise if you go to make any changes to the way you pay your loans.
I heard from my sister-in-law that a few weeks ago she made arrangements to have her loan payments come out of a new bank account. Well, when her payment date came, the Canada student loans people took the payment out of both accounts! When she called them they said that there was nothing they could do until the next 'cycle' or whatever. Well, it now turns out, the payments are coming out WEEKLY instead of monthly from BOTH accounts. My sister-in-law called them, freaking out. Again, they said that there was nothing they could do because their system was going to have some maintenance done or something like that. How can these people get away with this? My brother and his wife have a mortgage, car payments, etc. all coming out of these accounts through pre-authorized payments. They cannot afford this screw-up. It seems like there is no accountability with these people. This is the third time I've heard of this happening to friends of mine. |

Can't they close the accounts and open new ones at another bank? |

Yeah she should be able to do that. In the states it's actually illegal for anyone to take money out of your account without your consent...something called...STEALING. |

My BCSL got very strange a little while ago. The monthly payments were still being withdrawn, never missed a payment, but somehow the money was being sent to the wrong people. This is like four years of payments, and then about four months ago they did a little dipsy-doodle somewhere in the small intestine of Revenue BC and suddenly my money wasn't going to the right place. Still, it wasn't being returned either, and I had no inkling there was any problem. I got no notice in the mail.
Until about two months ago, when a collection agent sent a letter to my mom saying 'you owe us 3 grand. Pay us within ten days or we're putting on the long-coats and coming to your house with torches and dogs.'
I just paid the bastards. Sick of their s**t, and my niggling little payments. Lucky for me I had some money kicking around.
Then, yesterday, the collection agent sent me a check for 200 bucks, with not a word of explanation.
Oh well... |

I paid off my final loan with a lump sum, and I waited a month or so for the final bit of interest, but it didn't show up. My online account said that the balance was 0.
About 2 months later, the bank called my mother, all angry. They were asking why her son hadn't paid $2.75. My mom freaked out on them and left them stumbling and apologizing.
I then called them on the hotline and also told them off. They apologized profusely.
I overpaid them by a few cents. They can use that money to buy some lessons in customer service. |
