Mate, are you seriously asking whether anybody has taken vacation in Thailand before?

Buy a copy of the lonely planet, read the damn thing, then post any questions you may have on a Thai or Indonesian expat board.

Lonely planet covers all the islands save for tiny ones where you would no doubt be eaten by the locals. I'd recommend Sulawesi and particularly Manado up north there if you want somewhere that not too many people get to. If you do decide to go there, join up to ex pat korea dot com and try the travel forum there, as one of the members is currently living in that part of the world. The only thing with Indo is that you have only a one month tourist visa, where as Thailand gives you longer. Hope this helps.

As an example of some of the most boring monger-journalism ever put on the internet?

OP, let me know where it is you want to go and I will fill you in on more.

I thought Thailand was a month as well?

As for the question, I've recently learned that there are a hell of a lot of people down in Pattaya more or less permanently (aside from the visa runs). There are some condos and some of the hotels and other places to stay offer monthly rates. My buddy I'm meeting here paid 11,000 + a 4,000 baht deposit to stay at a pretty standard place a bit off the beaten track in Pattaya, and there are places with kitchens and things like that.

I would assume a similar set-up exists or can be arranged in less-traveled places down here, as heaps of people are doing the exact same thing.

I was very disappointed with Pattaya....it's a haven for sleazy old men to stroll aound with their young dolls in an effort to squeze as much more life out of what time they have left.
Plus the European influence on the place takes it away from its natural state.
The beach is dirty as well.

I was just renting a house on Ko Phangan, paying 6000 baht per month. This is a nice western style cottage with big bedroom, ensuite bathroom and a kitchenette with gas cooker. Not on the beach, but easy walking distance. You just get there and ask around, there are landlords who can take you on a tour around several places on their motorbike. It is a little bit wild west though (no contract, you just hand over the cash), but generally you shouldn't have problems if you enter into the deal with a smile.

BTW, my a local I was talking to thought I was completely insane to pay so much, so obviously you can get houses much cheaper if you have local connections.

Yeah, I've lived there several months at a time.

My suggestion is to read the guidebook like people already said. One month is still bordering on tourism anyway.

I suggest trying to take a 'mini-retirement' somewhere in Thailand for like 3 months. It really doesn't cost much--most people spend more on their two week vacations with hotels and drinks every night. Chiang Mai is great for the whole tourism-education scene. You can learn massage, Thai cooking, boxing, or what have you, for pennies.
