My CBC was mailed from the Ottawa police on the 28th of June (my time) & I realized that with 2 week-ends & 1 holiday it may take some time (a few days).
I'm expecting to pick it up at the embassy as well.

The embassy called me just now to let me know my CBC came in.
All is good in the world. Even better, I don't have to have it notarized.

2 months???? Did you do some 'proper' research to find out how you could get a vulnerable sector seach WITHOUT fingerprints that was fast?
It took me about 20 minutes to find out. Let me help you out. If you need a vulnerable sector search, you can get it at ANY police station in Canada since CPIC are all linked.
You need to fill out the form, photocopy 2 peices of ID (which are clearly listed what would be acceptable) and a letter stating the purpose of the background check. You only need a $45CDN money order payable to the "City of Ottawa", that I got from KEB.
Now go to this link
http://www.ottawapolice.ca/en/serving_ottawa/support_units/fees_outofcountry.cfm
It's very clear. Though they claim to take 3 to 6 weeks to process, I confirmed that my registered mail request was received and it took them 9 days to mail it to me. I know this because they emailed me to let me know when it was mailed out. No fingerprints were required. This is a service for people who are NOT residents of Ottawa for more than 5 years (which can be pretty much anyone).
The address where you mail it to is all there.
Very easy. Now if I hear any more posts about fingerprints & RCMP check & other crap services...I may just scream. There is FAR too much crap info on this board concerning CBC's. Follow the above link & all shall be good.
Oh yeah, you can have it mailed to the Canadian consulate for free. If you are on an E-visa, you can get it notarised on the spot. F-visa holder's don't have to & can simply pick it up for free. I know this for a fact since I just picked up my CBC from the consulate office.

Your mistake was trusting this board. NOONE would think agency criminal histories are valid unless they are from a police agency. I wouldn't, what made you think it was just as good as from the police itself?
This board provides some clues into how to do things, but isn't very good on accuracy. If you want to be sure, find out for yourself (as I did) and avoid these problems. My CBC is in & I submitted it well in advance.
Sorry to hear about your troubles, but it seems that you tried the easy way out without really finding out other alternatives.

Chickenlover, are you saying that any Canadian can get a CBC done through the Ottawa police, even if they haven't lived there? |

Yes I am.
I asked the officer this specific question. None of my ID's showed I lived in Ottawa (passport + birth certificate). If you request but haven't been there for 5 years, they just put you in the 2nd priority pile while they do city residents first.
Was very easy.

Chickenlover,
Good information. Thanks for that. I was born and raised in Ottawa, but haven't lived there in almost 15 years, so it's nice to know I can do my CBC through them if need be. |

Hello all,
The lack of defined, streamlined and consistent approaches for getting Canadian criminal record checks is easily explained in one word: police.
The processes related to performing criminal record checks are inherently 'business' functions, not police functions, but because the police control access to the databases in Canada, they get to make up the rules/processes. No offence intended to anyone in law enforcement but the police are generally not good service engineers. The police have a monopoly on the industry in Canada, and we all know what happens when competition is absent. To make matters worse, the police also have power and discretion combined with a lack of entrepreneurial spirit and little incentive for change.
I own a private company in Canada that facilitates ordering criminal record checks from police for individuals and companies. We know the police exceptionally well because they are our sole source supplier. Fortunately, we found one agency that saw the need and opportunity to work with the private sector. We actually exist because the police on their own generally don't deliver an adequate level of service, which is blatantly obvious from the hundreds of posts on ESL Cafe about this issue.
I am not here to promote our service. The Korean government decided that they don't like private companies, even if the private company helps people like you get your check from police - which is what we do. We don't and never have issued police checks - the police do. We are just the convenient conduit, but ignorance has beat us in Korea.
Regards,
Bill McMullin |
