The Daejeon Dilletantes, a group of amateur nobodies currently slacking in Korea so they can underachieve in peace, is presenting an English play at the Bad Apple Bar and Grill, in Wolpyeong-dong, this Saturday night. The play, all of a half-hour long at most, starts at 10pm. Called "Opposites Attract," it is a truly hilarious, snide comedy about relationships between men and, aah, the other genital group. If nothing else this play confirms that no matter how cynical you are , it is impossible to keep up.
The Bad Apple Bar and Grill, with which this correspondent has no financial relationship whatsoever other than leaving distressingly large sums of money at in exchange for a bubbly brown liquid, is near Wal-Mart. Go there and call 019 440-4842.
Just by way of a gratuitously negative comment, Daejeon is surely the lamest major city in Korea for English Language culture, either by Koreans or expats. In fact it is lame for social events of any kind. Jeonju, an hour south, has 215 foreigners (somebody checked with Immigration) and 200 of them turned out to the Halloween party this year. Gwangju has half the foreign population of Daejeon and a way better social scene.
How many turned out for Halloween in Daejeon, foreign population about 1,000? Roughly 100 or so at the old Zoo, because it was closing night, and less than 40 at all the other foreign haunts combined, I know because I went to them all.
Every attempt at establishing any cultural life beyond mindless boozing and skirt safari-ing is doomed to a pathetic half-life and ultimately an ignominious ending. A team of bright young things attempted valiantly to create "Arts Cafe," only to watch attendance tumble from 70 the first night to a pall-bearing eight or so a few months later, and that in spite of excellent performances.
The same terminal flesh-eating disease appears to infect every endeavour, viz, English Cafe, the Salon, the Poetry Night, whatever. No doubt some of the usual culprit wise-asses who contaminate this website with their semi-processed, frontal-lobe only, pre-pubescent watery puke offerings will rush to condemn this correspondent for his negativity and blame that for the Daejeon Malaise, but nay I say, it will not wash, God Knows I am an EMBITTERED OLD SOD, a state of mind which I relish frankly, and which keeps it all in perspective and provides an impermeable sheath against disappointment, but I had nothing to do with most of these fine attempts. Frankly speaking, I don't care a damn, I am just making conversation. |

I'd go to this stuff down in Daejeon if I actually knew how to get around the damn city. It's got 2 train stations! What's up with that? Telling a Cheonanite that it's near Walmart is like telling Kim Jongil that Saddam Hussein likes pizza. Big whoop. |

Zyzyfer,
Take a train to WEST Daejeon (Seodaejeon) station. I think it is closer. And I'll tell you what...you get to Walmart, call me and I will come and meet you and take you to the place.
PM me if interested.
Fair enough? |
