If your alien registration card suggests a visa finishes at the end of July, do you have to leave by the 31st or do you have a grace period.
I have a friend in this situation who wants to travel and see friends etc before she leaves but is scared what will happen when she rocks up at the airport a month later.
What advice can you give so i can pass it on.
Cheers. |

Dear Homeland Security
I am working in US on an E-1 visa that expires on 31 July.
How long after that can I stay?

Your ARC should specify a date and you have to be out by Midnight on that date or face a fine and a black mark on your record which matters if you're coming back to Korea. |

You have to leave on the date specified on your alien card. If you overstay by only a day you risk fines, and having to visit home for an interview every time you need a visa. You can extend your stay by going into immigration and applying for an extension with a ticket showing your exit date(this is around 30days)
Alternately they could just get on a ferry to Japan have some fun there for a few days and return on a tourist visa. |

The E-1 (and E-2) visa is a working visa for USA. |

There's no grace period, but you can get short extensions. She should definitely go to immigration beforehand rather than just show up at the airport and say "oops". |

I imagine a ferry ticket to Japan would work?
I heard 30,000 to extend. |

Free for 30 days. You need to take along your ticket for leaving Korea to get the extension. I have just done it. Simple and free. |

You can apply for a 30 day tourist visa prior to your sojourn expiration like some others have said. The immigration site states that you do need to make an appointment, but according to rhino it seems possible to do so without. Like goo said, you have to present your exit ticket at that time. |

Options for staying past visa
One go to immigration show plane ticket or ferry ticket when you are going. They look, they extend your visa. You are not allowed to work on this visa. I think they will extended for about max of thrity days.
Two - Short trip to a close by country - Japan, China, Guam - come back since you are likely Canadian, American, Australian, Irish, or English you are eligible for Visa Waiver so you can stay from 30 days to 6 months depending on country.
Three - just stay past but expect to pay fine and blackmark which could affect future employment.
Four - extend with you school |

I had a bad experience with that one.
I wanted to stay on for 30 days so I went to the immigration office in Busan with my plane ticket and details.
They asked me what I was planning to do for the 30 days and I said I was planning to travel around Korea and see all the things that I couldn't see while working because I was too busy.
The immigration wench told me there wasn't enough things in Korea that would warrent a 30 day extension so she would only give me a 15 day one and that would allow me to see everything interesting. So I had to go and pay a surcharge to change my airplane ticket to an earlier date.
Very Annoying.
Also a friend of mine overstayed her visa and she said that the fine rises by the day. It becomes expensive very quickly. |
