Hey there people....my friend found a box of kittens abandoned today. What should she do? We tried the Kitten shelter in Itaewon, but apparently they won't take in such young kittens. Anyway. She lives in a tiny room and works full time. Monday's coming, and we gotta solve this problem pronto.

Anyone want a kitten? Anyone know how we should FEED these things? (They're not taking in anything, getting scrawnier by the minute) Anyone know of other shelters around Seoul?

We don't want them turned onto a cruel place that will neglect them and then drown them in two weeks. However, we are willing to look into euthanasia. Seems better to kill them peacefully than live a tortuous few weeks before being ...butchered? drowned? Who knows in this country?

Please help. Thanks so much. Phone numbers, if you have them, would be most appreciated.

It depends on the age of the kittens. Have their eyes opened and if so are their eyes still blue (eye colour changes at around 5 weeks old I believe)? If you can get to a vet he can give you formula milk, failing that you can try baby formula milk. Do not give them cow's milk, it is not nutritious enough and may give them diaorrhea. The milk can be fed in a dropper but be careful not to choke them.

Raising orphan kittens is very difficult, and they need feeding regularly so if your friend is at work, it will be impossible.

Another thing I should mention is that a mother cat stimulates the kittens to evacuate their bowels by licking them. Therefore once the kittens have eaten their bottoms should be rubbed gently with damp cotton wool!

Get them so a vet asap, and ask the vet for kitten formula and advice on bottle feeding. Then try to find foster homes or permanent homes through www.animalrescuekorea.org. PM me if there's any way I can help (although I'm not sure what I'd be able to do).

Do you mean you tried Happy Kitten shelter in Itaewon (also known as Nabiya)? If not then their contact details are

contact Allie(Sungmi Hong) or Joon(Juyun Yu).
Email: [email protected]
Cell#(plz. txt your name and inquiry first.)
: Allie - 010 7711 0760 or Joon - 010 2412 3141

If that's the one you've already contacted then I'm not sure what's next. Don't kill them, that's for sure. You definately need to take them to a vet as soon as possible, and one that speaks English so you know what you have to do. I know that the Pet Toy clinic in Itaewon is uber helpful with strays and speak great English, the number is 02 795 2184. Do as much as you can, and DEFINATELY post on animalrescuekorea.org, someone might be able to help you there. Good luck.

HomePlus has two types of formula in the pet section. They are for dogs, but it is close enough in a pinch, and cheaper than a vet.

Cow's milk isn't the best, but it is better than nothing. Goats milk is much better. I've seen it at HomePlus, sometimes with banana flavor, which is OK for cats.

Another option is lactose free milk - I've seen it at EMart. The lactose, milk sugar, is one reason cows milk is not digested well.

You can add some corn syrup and perhaps a bit of vegetable oil to fortify whatever you choose. Kittens need extra fat, partly for the brain development.

Raw egg can also be added to the formula.

I raised an abandoned kitten, and used homemade yogurt with extra cream and corn syrup. The kitten did great.

Now, when you feed, you need to be patient. A bit of tubing from the aquarium section of LotteMart, etc., will do pretty good. It's better than a dropper cause the kitten can suck the liquid in at its own pace. But give it time to swallow, so you can stop the flow with a kink.

You may need to burp it after eating. And rubbing the posterior as though you were the mother washing it can help. Wash the face with a damp cloth, and keep the eyes clean.

After four weeks you can introduce solid type food, but you can start with a puree. Brown rice, chicken and chicken broth is good, with lots of fat. Canned mackerel is good when the kitten is a little older; the soft bones are good for calicum - crush them into the food.

The kitten needs taurine for healthy eyes. This is added to cat food, not dog food. So you need to provide real cat food fairly early. Taurine is found in liver -- chicken liver, pork liver, beef liver. I have yet to see any liver here, though. Chicken gizzards are also a good source, but need to be cooked for an hour or more.

If you have some vitamins, you can crush and add to the milk, etc. Vitamin A or cod liver oil is very good.

Never give a cat any onion, not even the smallest amount in food. It causes anemia. Garlic is OK, though, and a little powder can be used to flavor food. Also, no Xylitol sweetener.

Get a tube of Revolution flea ointment and apply a small amount to the back of the neck when the kitten is about 8 weeks old to kill worms. Seal the tube with chewing gum and you might be able to use some more in a couple of weeks or a month.

And most of all, do some reading on the internet. There's plenty of tips from people with more experience than me.

I have seen some pet stores with kittens, so maybe one will take yours when they are older.

They say cats are finally starting to catch on in Korea, mostly with single women. Figure out where you can reach secretaries, etc., with posters and maybe you can find them a home.

When I was a kid I saw a documentary about hand raising a cat from the day after it is born. And the above info on how to feed it is what was on the show and what I did. In this case, it is not an abandoned kitten. It is a way to raise the most freindly and smartest cat you can imagine. I had a friend who had a pet cat, she was nice. She had 7 kittens, 6 100% white and 1 100% black. I took the black one. You wait one day after it is born so it can have mother's milk, so it will get the antibodies. Then you take it from its mother and don't let it see another cat. You spend as much time as possible with it. I carried it in my shirt pocket all day long. Talk to it, kiss it, pet it, rub it behind the ears. It will start puring when only a week old. They always tell you not to play with kittens because their eyes will open too soon and get an infection. True, unless they are kept in a very clean enviroment. The love and attention starting day two makes it become very friendly. And, this also makes the kittens eyes open much sooner. And that is a big factor. The sooner it can see, the sooner it will start to develop its intelligence. Expose it to all kinds of things. Different objects, sounds, all kinds of experiences. Let your dog sniff it and lick it. Start playing with it with a ball, etc. as soon as it can walk.

The end result will be a cat that has the mentality of a very smart dog. It went on walks with me all over our fram, in the woods, etc. He would fetch a stick, do all kinds of tricks, but most importantly is he was so loving it was unbelievable. Also, and they are not sure why, when you do this your cat will love water. And they will love to swim. They will dog paddle like a dog. We had a big pond on our farm. I walked up to it with my cat following behind. I jumped in and started to swim, and just a second later my cat did.

I had him for 15 years. When he died, a part of me did too.

Kwanjuchicken, great post. Tugs me heart strings a bit. I always dreamed of having a pet cat that acted like a dog, that I could take for walks. Anyway, thanks for that.

So my friend took them to a vet in Kangnam, and hopefully they will be cared for and then given out for adoption.

Thanks everyone for the helpful replies.

The kitten shelter doesn't take in kittens?

Do they even know what kittens are?

That was funny. The drowning comment the other guy made wasn't, but this was.

I think I didn't include the quote right. We'll see. If not, how do I include past posts as Quotes in my reply?
