My university winter break program starts BEFORE Christmas (December 22.) and lasts 7 weeks. It is also mandatory for all native teachers. From what I have seen "if I understood it correctly" there are tons of classes offered from 7:30 AM until late at night.
Does anyone else have a similar situation ?
If we had such a thing as maturnity leave, I think I would do my best to lay an egg right about now. |

A similar situation at my uni. Winter classes for the English Dept, and I have no problem with that, but the attached Language Institute has its own schedule, which doesn't coincide with the departmental one, and eats into my vacation time. And one is 'volunteered' to do those classes. Whatever became of the mythical university program with three or four months off? Does anyone actually have that kind of deal? |

It would seem, from reading the university job postings here at Dave's, that the universities require their Native English teachers to teach either a) children or b) Korean teachers during the Summer vacation and/or Winter vacation.
I understand also that if it is NOT written into your contract you are best to "volunteer" for these classes as you probably won't have your contract renewed if you don't.
A rip, eh? |

A university providing the best for students and teachers.
How about this winter teaching opportunity?
Six teachers enjoy a comfortable stay in one suite
(3 rooms per suite, 3 desks, 1 bathroom)
45 hours per week.
12,000 won per hour
Enjoy working on Saturday until 3 PM
Teach elementary through middle school students
(maybe some high school students) |

Hey at 8 or 12 hours a week, how can you really complain? You still still get your vacation right? Life is good, be happy. |

It varies from school to school. Deals range from some universities which expect teachers to teach throughout both breaks (summer and winter) with only school holidays off, to those that don't expect you to teach at all during breaks. At my university, you are expected to teach during one break, and you get the other one off (about 10 weeks). But yes, I have seen ads for some unis with 16+ weeks paid holiday, although there don't seem to be as many of those as there used to be. |

Some of us are fortunate enough to have 20 weeks of actual paid vacation to go along with holidays, festival week, etc....
They do exist but may some day become extinct.
I hope not. |

I wonder what kind of teachers would degrade themselves to have to share a room...this is being 17yrs old and going to college for the first time either...1 bathroom for 6 people is nuts, just nuts. I bet some guys would end up crapping in the sink. |

A lot of universities are trying to prop their finances up with extra classes during the vacations. Enrollments are dropping, so other sources of income are needed. If the university is organized then there goes your long vacations. If the staff are a little slow, and not interested in the extra work to organize for the extra money, then your lucky. |
