Anheuser Agrees to InBev Deal
By DAVID KESMODEL, DENNIS K. BERMAN and DANA CIMILLUCA
July 13, 2008 8:46 p.m.

Anheuser-Busch Cos. agreed to be acquired Sunday by InBev NV for $49.91 billion, creating the world's largest beer maker and placing an iconic American company in the hands of a Belgian-Brazilian giant.

The $70-a-share deal marks an abrupt end to what many expected to be a prolonged takeover drama. For weeks, Anheuser showed stiff resistance to a sale. But last week, InBev, based in Leuven, Belgium, drew its St. Louis rival into friendly discussions by increasing its offer by $5 a share.

The companies plan to call the new brewer Anheuser-Busch InBev. Anheuser would have two seats on the board, people familiar with the matter said.

The deal, subject to shareholder approvals, would cap Anheuser's roughly 150 years of independence and create a global juggernaut. The new company would have net sales of about $36 billion a year, followed by London's SABMiller PLC. The two giants hawk about 300 brands, including Anheuser's Budweiser and Bud Light and InBev's Stella Artois and Beck's.

I wonder how many companies there will be in 10 years or if they will all be one giant monopoly. Question

Anything is possible but I doubt we'll see a worldwide giant beer monopoly. If A-B InBev started in monopoly practices by raising prices and restricting supply, there are thousands of mini-breweries throughout the US alone that would be all too happy to snag that abandoned market share.

From the Saturday WSJ:
Quote:

Ill tell you one thing, said the 21-year-old concrete worker during his lunch break at The Brick of St. Louis bar, in the shadow of this citys storied Anheuser-Busch Cos. brewery, if Budweiser is made by a different country, I dont drink Budweiser anymore. Ill go back to Wild Turkey. (Wild Turkey, a Kentucky bourbon, is owned by French drinks giant Pernod Ricard SA.)

I drink Bud, almost exclusively. I love the stuff. I don't care who produces it.

People who held the shares now have lots of money. That's a good thing.

Indeed. And the USA has hundreds, if not thousands, of them. Anyone who drinks Bud in the Pacific Northwest is either 17 years old or lives in a trailer park.

Beer ain't rocket science.

Warren Buffett is the biggest shareholder. He's got more shares than anyone w/in the Busch family. The man certainly knows his stocks.

That's a good thing as he's donating most of his money to charity upon his death. So thank you Europeans. You're not only sending that American money back to America but it will eventually be employed by the Bill & Melinda Gates foundation to find a cure for AIDS and educate children.

I don't really care who owns what. When I see stories of one giant successful company buying up another giant successful company to no real purpose, I just wonder why that money couldn't be spent on investing in some innovative company doing R & D in some new field.

Well, I mean that, no matter what, people are not going to be happy.

Distributors are going to change, products are going to change, prices are going to change... People are never going to be satisfied.

Since I don't drink beer, I don't have to worry with that.
