|
|
Memory 250GB (at Least)
Ram 4GB
2-3 Ghz
Windows XP
Ethernet Card
DVD/CD Burner
Would it be cheaper just to buy from Dell (U.S.) and have them ship it to Korea?
One more question. If I did buy a laptop from Korea would it work it Japan? (Do they use the same plugs?) |

with no graphics card, i wouldnt pay more than 1M WON for that.
you need to think about screen size, weight and type of CPU too.....i.e intel or AMD.
you should also expect to get wireless, bluetooth/Irda or both.
dont let hard drive space and memory be a deal breaker for you. Check the maximum amount of memory the laptop can take - its easy and cheap to upgrade in the future, same for hard drive space, buy an external drive.
dont buy Dell....such a p.o.c brand....id reccomend something like Acer, Asus or Toshiba. Good brands, good parts and good warranties.
As for the plugs, no they are not the same. But youll only need a plug adapter ($5) not a voltage converter cos most likely youll have a laptop power cable that has a range of 100V-240V input and will be fine to use anywhere in the world as long as you can plug it in. |

| Yeah I wanted to get at least a 15 inch moniter because I watch all my movies on my laptop. An ethernet card is a must. You say one million won? That is really reasonable I think. So Acer, Asus or Toshiba are really good brands? Thanks for all your help. |

nothing is wrong with Dell, Stacy, in my opinion. If you ask 10 people about computers, each one will have a different company that they're unhappy with. Depends on personal experience, I believe. I've never had any problem with them.
No offense, but you probably want someone to help you more with this. From your list of specs, it appears that you don't know too much about computers. Again, I don't mean any offense by that, just that you do want to be careful with the purchase, you know. |

I guarantee you will overpay for it here compared to USA or Canada..
ACER a good brand.. Thats laughable..
Dell makes good stuff, just don't bother with Inspiron junk.. Get a XPS or their business line of laptops they are great workhorses. Asus. well... My went up in smoke quite literaly. |

One would assume that you need the portability of a laptop and are willing to pay a premium for it.
The CHEAPEST, new laptops you will find in Korea will be in the 800k won range and they will come with Vista now (Not XP). A comparable desktop will cost about 300k with monitor. Top end laptops will run about 2 million.
Ether (10/100baseT) and wireless LAN are standard in all laptops now.
Unless you are planning to use 64 bit windows there is NO POINT in getting 4 gigs of RAM. 32 bit windows (your usual windows installation) can only use a maximum of about 3 gigs.
You can get an entry level desktop (dual core) that will do everything you ask for about 200k won (new - on the shelf price) and add in another 60k (used lcd) to 300k (24" wide LCD) for the monitor. A basic 19" LCD runs about 100k.
Back to the laptop issue. IF you import one from the US/Canada you will pay shipping and import taxes when it gets here. These extra costs may very well negate the savings between prices here and there.
You will need a simple plug adapter when you travel outside of Korea or if you get a laptop from home. The brick can handle any flavor of electricity (110-240VAC - 50/60Hz) from the wall that you want to put into it.
I think that covers most of what you asked.
And as an afterthought, just to add fuel to the fire, you can get a complete quad core system (including monitor) for about the same price as an entry level laptop.

Ditto on the Dell XPS 1530. Mine is similar to T Dot's amd I'm quite happy.
Dell Korea has it. You can order it from them and save a little time and money. You can also get Vista in English. |

| I have a Dell Inspiron 8200. The only consistent problem I had was that it ate batteries. And at 80 bucks apiece, it got expensive. On the other hand, it has a huge screen, was pretty quick, and stayed quick when I propped it up to keep the bottom cool. I lugged that sucker back and forth on TDYs' to wherever maybe 35 times and never had a problem. I would get into a hotel.motel.barrack and be set up and booting in 1 minute flat. Then I would unpack. |
