I am contemplating the run from my hagwan. I feel life is too short to be in extremely unhappy, undesirable situations. My directors are the stingiest people I've ever known. I have only been here a short while but everyday is a nightmare and I want to leave. I know Ill be completely screwed over giving my 6 week's (yes, 6) notice. The directors know Im unhappy but continue to do dodgy practices. I do have a conscience and would feel bad ditching the 5% of the students who are nice. The other foreign teacher is a raving lunatic whose existence and well-being is of no concern to me. I dont think I ever really need to come back to Korea but in the event that I do, how long would Immigration likely to ban me if I ran? Until my visa runs out and/or when the school cancels the visa and hires a new teacher? I am supposed to payback the cost of the airfare to Korea if leaving before contract expiry. The honorable, conscionable me would like to leave this amount in an envelope in my kitchen. The realistic me says **** these lying, inflexible dimwits and take them for what theyre worth... If I dint paynack the airfare AND the school complained to immigration am I banned for 2 years? 5 years?
Mod Edit: Edited for language. |

Sounds like it's time to take off. How about giving them two weeks notice (knowing full-well they aren't going to pay you your final salary) or working an extra two weeks on top of your paycheque before taking off? Despite your harsh feelings for them, at least you won't come out as the bad guy.
If they owe you money rather than vice-versa, I don't think they will report you to immigration. It's not illegal to quit your job. |

thanks! that's not a bad idea - 2 weeks unpaid work would more than cover the cost of the airfare they paid. |

They will call you the bad guy no mattter what.
Why would you give them 2 weeks of free labour after what you have gone through?
That immigtation blacklist is 99% hype. It is geared mostly for criminals- those that are to be deported. Not little hogwon workers! |

Why bring someone else into an already bad situation?
I agree with the other poster. Calculate your airfare, your daily rate, and work that number of days.... |

Believe that. Speaking from experience- it's all hype. |

I hired 2 teachers because they were in a BAD situation. They were flown over, and once they arrived, they were told there was no job for them. The school searched for other positions for them, but they were in an area they didn't want to work in. They agreed to the original position because of location. 2 weeks go by, they still have no work. They start to look for a job. We got in touch, I made a deal with the school that I would pay the plane tickets, but because they came through a different recruiter, we would only pay our recruiter, and not the first one.
Long story short, the first recruiter they came with filed a complaint with immigration, and we were not able to get a visa processed until the complaint was pulled. The original recruiter even said to the teachers "I own you." So, it is possible, if the recruiter, or the school is pi$$ed off enough, to get a teacher placed on a blacklist with immigration. |

There IS a blacklist, but it's as bad as many are led to believe by crooked hogwan owners/directors. |

I was in the process of applying for their E2 Visa. Immigration told us flat out, that they would not allow the E2 Visa until the written complaint was pulled. This was directly dealing with Immigration. Once I cleared things up the the S.O.B. recruiter, I was immediately granted the E2 visas for my teachers. |

Can you say the recruiter, the guy sounds like a real Cheney, and I'm sure that none of us would ever like to work with him. Anyway, I'm planning on coming back from a runner this Christmas, so I'll let you all know what happens. |

The recruiter is different from the agency based in Canada. He was a real tool. All I know is that his name was Brent Kim. I do have his cell number, but I don't feel it appropriate to post it here. If you are dealing with a Brent, pm me, and we can figure out if it the same one.
It wasn't the contact in Canada that was a prime $%#*. The two teachers went through an agency called asknow.ca. It was the guy on this end that royally threw them the hoop job.
They came expecting a job, and once here there was nothing for them. 2 weeks go by, no income, no job, no help. That's when I was introduced to them. This situation damn near gave me an ulcer. But, in the end it all worked out. The school they were going to was EG in Junggye. The recruiter on this end was Brent Kim. asknow.ca surely had nothing to do with it, but could've screened properly. |
