This made me chuckle:

Students can update their photos at any time via their university Web sites, but problems can still occur. "Sometimes there are funny arguments because some students forget to update their photos after getting plastic surgery," a student said. |
Even if this system were foolproof, it's like leading a horse to water: you can't make 'em learn. |

Let's wait for a system which measures whether the student is asleep in class. As for me, I'd rather know who my students are and look at them to see if they're there. |

Just wondering what the sense in all this is. Wouldn't the acid test be if the students actually do the work and pass the exams? Actually learning? I always thought mandatory attendance was ridiculous if I could learn the same thing from a book, teach me something I can't learn from a book. |

Tell me about it, but the way the incentives are wired, if attendance was suddenly not taken, almost no one would come to class, and it's (unwritten?) policy at many universities that students who attend are students who pass, whether they've worked hard and learning something or not.
Co-workers of mine have told their classes that they'll mark everyone present no matter what. This keeps the students who want to learn coming and the ones who just show up and sleep away. I've been tempted myself. |

As I have said many times and tell all my students....I do NOT give grades..you earn them. Don't come crying to me if you earned a "D" or "F," you did it to yourself. Go ahead and complain to "wangjumnim,"
I tell them the same thing. |
