Morning all,
I'm coming up to the end of my current contract (well October 7th) in my current public school, and I'm looking to move onto another public school. I'm looking either staying within GEPIK and transferring to either Islan and Bucheon or going to the SMOE programme.... A few questions (any help would be appreciated).
1) Must I return home after my current contract? I'm from the UK and can't be bothered to fly all the way home to then jump on a plane a few days/weeks later. Would much rather stick it out here. If I don't return home would my current school still give me the value of a one way ticket or is that at their discretion?
2) What salaries can I expect within programmes of GEPIK and SMOE respectively if I've thus far got a TEFL certificate and 2 years experience teaching (one in elementary school in Suwon, the other in six months periods in foreign language schools back home).
3) The big sticky... As stated above my current contract doesn't expire until October 7th... Will there be positions available around then (and do people know of such positions). There must be some positions as of course I started my contract on 10/07/2007 so I'd have thought they'd have been people in a similar situation... Any pointers in general directions and advice would be much appreciated! |

I am new to all this, so don't quote me on it but:
1) I am pretty sure that once you have taught in Korea, you just need to leave the country to get a new E-2 visa. Osaka is a popular place to get this done. I know if you stay with the same company they pay for this visa run. I'm not entirely sure what happens if you are switching from one company/school to another.
2) For GEPIK you should be getting at least 2.2 I believe, but again, don't quote me on it. I'm getting 2.1 with a CELTA and no experience.
3) I've been told that only GEPIK will offer positions that late in the fall. Myself and two friends will not finish CELTA until October 3rd, and we were all offered public school positions in Bucheon through Korvia (ask for Ann).
Hope that helps a little. |

Yeah I went through Korvia last year.... Where abouts in Bucheon are you teaching? Is it a definite gig that you've got lined up? |

We are supposed to get the contract today, so it is fairly definite. The three of us will be at Bumyeong middle school, Sangdo middle school, and Simwon middle school. I'm pretty sure they are all within a couple blocks of eachother. |

No, you don't need to go back to the UK, just a visa run to Japan, however if you don't have your criminal record check, get on that ASAP (as it can take 6weeks to arrive). I doubt the school will give you the money in lieu of an airticket (the contract is actually quite strict about that, and you have to leave korea with in 10 days of the expiration of your contract to recieve airfare)..there are a few tricks around this (not entirely ethical) though..I'll leave you to search
2. GEPIK payscale would be 2.1mil, to get to level 1 (2.3mill), you need 2 years experience in accredited institutes...you might be able to convince them about your experience back home...but generally Korean experience is preferred (hence they say 'accredited institutes') Not sure about the SMOE payscale, but I believe you might make a little bit more with your qualifications.
3. There will definitly be positions around then for GEPIK (you might have to wait a week or so), there might be a problem because you are looking at specific areas, rather than the program as a whole. Most teachers only announce their intention to renew or not about 2 months before the end of their contracts, so a lot of schools won't know until August whether they need a teacher or not. Would be worth it to speak to your recruiter and tell her the situation, additionally schools often try and hire directly, and there are a couple of ads on the jobs board every week for those schools...so check in every day and keep your eyes open~~ |

This will be my first time in Korea, though I have taught young children for the past few years. Middle school will be a new experience for me! What age group are you looking to teach in Bucheon? |

Hey will be teaching middle school also, around about the same region. I've actually spent a fair bit of time in Bucheon before it's a nice area... Is it friends you're coming over with? |

Well, I haven't done it myself...but I've heard...and read a few threads here (usually pop up every couple of weeks) - basically, you buy the ticket, show the school the receipt, get paid...cancel ticket. Costs you a cancellation fee of about W50,000. |
