Anybody here get a letter saying that they had to report to jury duty while working in korea? Would working in Korea make you exempt from doing so? i dont see the benefit paying about 2K just to do so...

Do they really think you're going to fly all the way home to sit in court for a case that probably won't even go to trial? Yeah right.

Actually, yes, I did get called for jury duty.

I wrote a letter requesting a deferment, and my explanation was acceptedby the superior court.

I also had my mother (who is a fantastic negotiator and has power of attorney for me) call the number on the notice.

If you are going to live overseas, btw, you should appoint a trusted relative or friend as having power of attorney for such a case. You can give general or limited power of attorney to the individual and then get it notarized. This essentially allows the person to act in legal matters (government, finances, etc.) for you while you are out of the country.

No, you're not flying home for jury duty as it's only like $12 a day to cover your lunch and bus fare. I understand you can get in trouble if you blow it off, but some cities are don't prosecute while others do.

I served jury duty 2 years ago in St. Louis after deferring it for over a year due to needing to do my job while working paycheck to paycheck. I finally did it 2 weeks before leaving for Korea just to get the monkey off my back as I wouldn't be able to keep continuing if not present. I found it was all the lowest educated and most unemployed people only who serve while the white collar and professionals are exempting themselves. It's not hard to walk in there in a suit and tell them you're required at your job to keep the business operating. They should also be able to exempt you if you're no longer a resident.

There would be nothing worse than to re-enter the USA and be detained on something so stupid as this.

I've never been called for jury duty, but my wife who is a Korean citizen was in TX. Obviously she didn't have to do it. Made me wonder where they get the names from to make calls.
