Any ideas for what to do during a long wait at Sydney airport? Have read online that it's easy to get in and out of the city but I'm there at night (arrive 8pm, flight leaves 9am next day - it's a cheap flight!).

As a female travelling alone is it reasonable to go into the city and have a quick look-see at the Opera House, for example, and then head back to the airport for a pre-boarding nap?

* The airport to the centre of the city is 10 minutes at most by train. So yes there is more than enough time. But the trains are not 24 hours. They will stop at around midnight and start again at around 5am.

* You could just stay in a hostel for about $30US per night and get a few hours sleep and a free shower. There are plenty around Central station.

* There are plenty of bars, night clubs, movie theaters and live shows that run until maybe 3am, especially in the gay district not far from the centre which perhaps have less machismo than regular sports bars . After that hour there is not much.

You'll be fine.

If you have time check into a quick stop at Sydney Tower...It's offers a 360 degree city view and I imagine it's quite nice at night...I was there during the day...It was worth every penny of the admission fee...Sydney is one of the most beautiful modern city scapes in the world.

OP, make a reservation if you are going to stay near Central Station. The Wake Up hostel is one of best in the world, but they sell out. Nomad's is also good.

Those places have in-hostel bars and lots of cool people. They also have the bar/club info for you. Many hostels offer discounts.
