| If you work at a University and it has both "foreign language instructors" (BAs, MAs..) AND "visiting professors" (MAs.. probably would like people with PhDs but don't have them..), what's the difference? I'm talking about a regular uni English department, not in a language center or something. Do the visiting profs get paid more? If so how much? Do they have fewer hours? Any other benefits? |

At the university for which I work, we have two different types of foreign teachers; Adjunct Professors (대우교수) and Full-time Lecturers (전임강사). The four Adjunct Professors (AP) hold BAs, MAs and PhDs in non-related fields, the two Full-time Lecturers (FL) have MAs in a related field. The AP are paid a lower base than the FL, are on an E2 (or F), and renew their contract on a yearly basis. The FL have running contracts and are on an E1 (or F).
The FL aid in curriculum design and management of the language program, and receive some extra perks such as small stipends to attend professional development sessions and do research.
The FL also receive first crack at extra projects available, like teaching continuing education classes...etc. |

No visiting profs. at our uni.
We have 2 waygooks working in the English department, and another 4 with the unigwon. One of the two in the English department has a BA in a non-related field. The other has an MA in education. The folks on the unigwon side include a certified US teacher with an MA in education who came from an US public school, a guy with an MA in Literature, and two BA's (one of which is Journalism/English working on an MA/TESOL). I have heard they hired a new guy, but I don't know much about him.
Pay and benefits are the same between the English dept. jobs and the unigwon. The unigwon people just teach a few more Freshman classes. That's pretty much the only difference. Pay starts around 2.5 base for 15 hours for all of us (but they tend to add another 100,000 each year we're here). |
