Just a micro-rant...

So more than a week ago, this teacher from another school asked me to do her elementary school camp from tomorrow morning.

I said ok. How many lesson plans? How many students and what level? etc...
She said, "Don't worry, the lesson plans are all prepared. You just have to present them." Ok, a little suspicious so I said I would talk to her later in the week. I put together a few lesson plans just in case.

She calls me this afternoon. "I'm sorry. Espcially Lesson plan. We(T/F team) decided The subject only."

So at 6pm on my Sunday evening with my family I have to discard the lesson plans I prepared as backup, and start on a whole new set (6) for tomorrow morning.

Good grief. How rude is that!

I've already told her I wouldn't be doing camps for her school again.

well, the topics are supplied. One for example is, Table manners.

-So, online to do some research into the differences between Korean and North American table manners.
-While I'm doing that, build a vocabulary database.
-Cull vocab list to fit students level.
-Think up an activity.
-Lay out the lesson plan.
-Start with brainstorm to learn what common vocabulary they already have.
-Introduce new vocabulary.
etc...
-Figure out how long each section should take.
---Still trying to figure out an activity.
-Ahh, got it.
-Complete lesson plan.

Start on next lesson plan.

Some lesson plans come together quickly, and some just slay me.

What else to do tonight is watch movies with my family, cook them Sunday dinner (tonight was to be lamb stew).

Your problem lies in your initial response - "Ok." Rolling Eyes

The answer is never "Ok." ... it is ALWAYS "No.".

"No." "No."... "No."... "I don't do that."... "No!" Cool

Well, I already agreed to do the camp, and once I've agreed, I feel I'm bound to make it happen, no matter how porly they perform on their end.

There-in lies your problem. Life is too short to make promises and be screwed because of them.

Lamb-Stew is something that shouldn't be trivialized!!!

That's all fine. Keep your word nd do the camp, BUT tell them it is NOT your problem about the lesson plans. THEY said the lesson plans would be done and for you not to worry about them. So don't worry about them. THEY will be cancelling their Sunday plans, not you. If nothing is ready for Monday *shrug* C'est la vie. THEIR camp will suck because of THEIR lack of planning, not yours.

You rolled over for their incompetence.

You did not agree to do the lesson plans though. They shafted you. She knew full well the lesson plans had not been prepared when she said that. She lied to you and gave you minimal time to know the truth. Now she's probably thinking "Aha, stupid foreigner! Now I don't have to work on these lesson plans. Boy did I ever pull a fast one on him!"
Right now she's probably having a few beers with her friends down at the local hof, laughing about how they tricked you.

If I were in your shoes, I would just point out that, yes I agreed to do the camp, but not the lesson plans. Since they broke the agreement I don't feel bound to honor it. If they had kept their word then yes. But they broke the agreement because they were too lazy, then as far as I am concerned I have no obligation whatsoever. THEY broke the agreement not me, so it's null and void.

Oh and did she agree to pay you? She'll probably end up breaking that agreement too as well. After all, why not? She already got away with pulling a fast one on you already...

Well, the first four classes are done. At the opening ceremony this morning I met with the principal. Nice guy. He wanted to practise his English, so we discussed things like disorganization and professionalism, and I apologized for not being able to do their camp next year. I let him force the reason out of me... He spent the next ten minutes with the lady. I think she jacked her professional developement points for that camp. I just got that feeling from seeing the sinlge tear running down her cheek after she left. I'm surprised that the principal reacted so strongly, but then again, his predecessor (sp) is my biggest cheerleader and they are fast friends.
The money will be there. I'm not worried about that.

As far as not being my responsibility. Well, I consider myself a professional. Not saying anything about anyone else, just me. I waould be embarrassed to show up to a class full of kids and stand there like a gaping idiot. The students don't know whose fault it is. They just see, "Bad Teacher".

Good point.

What gets me is when you try to be organized ahead of time, and Koreans just don't get it, and then they expect the world from you at T-minus-10-seconds.
