Have you seen that advert on Discovery Channel about Seoul? 'Pictures can only catch so much.....The rest of Seoul I keep in my heart." Then it does the 'Seoul: Soul of Asia' nonsense. First of all, any Chinese person or Indian watching it is going WTF? That little appendange hanging off the side of China thinks it's the 'soul' of Asia? Are they fucking retaded? Most notably, there is the whole "I keep the rest of Seoul in my heart" nonsense. That kind of advert maybe works for Vienna, Paris and Praque. It emphaticaaly does not work for the ugly chaotic concrete mess that is Seoul. It's like they saw this ad somewhere and thought 'Hey, we've stolen everything else from the West. Let's steal this nifty little advert about Rome and apply it to Seoul. It should work." Idiots.... You don't keep Seoul in your heart. You keep it in your lungs. |

The most striking thing about that commercial for me is something I didn't notice till someone else on this board pointed it out... about 90% of the shots have slate roofs in them. So, from this commercial and the one with "Lisa" at Lotte World, we have:
Seoul! Soul of Asia. You should come HERE!
You can see:
Bumper Cars
The Wiking
A club
"Hot things" or "Hotness" depending on what you hear
Korean Food
Slate Roofs |

Yeah, that advert stretches reality to breaking point. Exactly which part of Seoul is he keeping in his heart? The bumping, pushing, spitting, hacking, traffic madness, crowds, heat, exhaust pollution, insane candle vigils, dog meat restaurants...? I wish the commercial would have been bigger on specifics.
And the slated roofs. I also find it hilarious that they kept in a shot of Everland. Yeah, let's travel a thousand miles to ride a roller coaster. |

When the British show "Holiday" went to Seoul one of the attractions in the very short piece was............a supermarket. In Korea, you can go there and taste food! That was the most appealing thing they could find for a western audience.
The photography in Korean travel pamphlets always blows me away. I really want to visit that country someday. Those photographers should get medals. The video from PeteJB is the same - where are these places with no cruddy stuff everywhere? Do they knock buildings down to get these shots? Maybe they are just, in the end, creating bad feeling? |

Everland is a 35 min express bus ride from downtown Gangnam. |

Gee...an advertisement making over exaggerated claims? NOOOOOO WAY. Newsflash, pretty much every country that makes these "national ad" campaigns blow their own horn about something or another. Jewel of Asia, land of this and that...whatever. It's advertising. You take all claims with a grain of salt. Especially when it's something as epistemological as being the "Soul of Asia". |

Because, as we all know, the tourism campaign is aimed squarely at those of us living in Seoul and not, say, people who live outside the Korean peninsula often a thousand, or more, miles away. |

The real SOUL of Asia should be India. That's where most of the religions on this continent originated from. |

calls for a dramatic increase in the number of psychiatrists.
