i left my laptop on overnight to download some stuff. woke up the next morning.....internet wasnt working at all. it says im connected but wont open up any browsers, nothing.....im not exactly the most computer savvy so i have no idea what to do. i pinged my DNS and there seems to be no problem there, all 4 packets are workin fine.....

any help would be appreciated as i need the net back!!

oh forgot to say, my director called the internet company and they said everything is fine on their end. they suggested repairing the connection but nothing. i removed the modem and rebooted, hoping that reinstalling it would sort it out but no joy....

Scan for viruses, adware, and spyware.

start:
run - " ftp://ftp.netscape.com " (no quote marks)

If you can see anything then you have a problem with your browser and NOT your internet.

Time to stop using IE.

Does anyone know - Does mozilla have an FTP server or just web service for downloading firefox?

Do you use Zone Alarm? I had a similar problem after installing some Windows updates for XP. I later I received updates from Zone Alarm that they said would solve an internet problem with the latest XP update. Unfortunately I only got that after having reinstalled everything, which incidentally did sort out the internet problem.

Yes.
ftp.mozilla.org/

and the firefox stuff is in here.....used it to get FF3 before final release.

ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/releases/

As for the itnernet problems, do the basic things like turn off your PC, unplug your network cable.
Also check other applications like online games, and shit to make sure that internet is out and its not just your browser like tom said.
Try Windows Media player and go into the Online thing where you can browse music etc....thatll link up if internet is working.

Also your IP *might* have expired cos you left your comp on over night, its unliely but it might have happened - a restart would fix this.

Bring it to an internet cafe or try wifi, at least then you can start to isolate the problem.

Try using outlook express or open up your bittorrent program and see if that works.

Is your browser even opening?

If you were torrenting heavily you prolly flooded your tcpip stack in windows. There is a concurrent connection limit set by MS. So you need to reboot to reset it. Its also possible that if you have a router you flooded that as well, so reboot your modem and router if you have one.

ok, the browsers are opening but just not doing anything. ive tried the usual unplugging the modem and all that but nothing has worked. engineer came out to look at the connection, says its fine. ive scanned for viruses, nothing.

ttompatz when i type that in i just get an error message....something about there not being a folder?? and i dont use IE, i use firefox.

ive tried the internet connection in school but i cant get that to work either......im not losing any packets but when i check the connection, the number of packets being sent/received is really low.

i dont use a router....as for the tcpip thing, well i dont havea clue about that!! how do i reset this exactly?? does it sound like i have to reinstall xp? hopefully you guys can help....not having the internet at home is a pain in the ass!! but if all else fails, there's a repair shop in the next town so i'll take a trip there tomorrow....

thanks for the help!

uh, how old is your laptop? do you use an ethernet card? those do have a tendency to fail after a couple of years - mine failed about a month ago and I was beside myself not believing it; thinking it was something else - but no, KT came out and said my ethernet card needed replacing - cost about 10,000 won

especially if you took it to your school and it still didn't work - calm down, it'll be ok !! Wink

ive read somethin online about a guy having problems with his internet connection too, same kinda thing as me......something to do with xp updates and zone alarm not working well together. so ive uninstalled zone alarm and will try to see if it works later. think this is my last resort before taking it to the repair place tomorrow!

well that seems to have worked!! i uninstalled zone alarm and then tried the internet connection in school and it now works. i cant see me havin any problems when i try at home later cos the engineer said there was nothing wrong with the connection.....so it just looks like zone alarm and the new xp updates dont work well together!
