Well, this leads to another question (and pardon me for knowing so little about all this)---- where can I buy a safe? Will a place like E-Mart or Lotte Mart have one at a good price? Would a local hardware store have one? Hoiw much would a safe run me?

A small safe is going to weigh 150 pounds or so. If you have it delivered, people will know you have one, presumably to store valuables, and exactly where you live. If you're primarily just wanting your items protected from fire, then a safe is a great decision. If you're worried about theft, it's a liability. The main way to prevent theft is for nobody to think you have something worth breaking into your home.

You need to blend your valuables in with your pad and let potential thieves steal less valuable items that are visible. That could be anywhere. Inside a tube of toothpaste, in a puttied over nook in the wall with the wallpaper glued back down over it, inside a ziplock bag in the bottom of a half-empty can of paint, etc.

I'm in a pretty much zero crime neighborhood in the middle of nowhere, so as long as I lock my house itself, I don't really need a 150 pound safe.

I'm thinking more in terms of a small lockbox, something well under 150 pounds (although either way, I wouldn't have it delivered--- I've got a car and freinds to help with the lifting....) The kinda thing I could, if need be, attach to something bigger with a bike lock.

But really, simply renting a box from the bank would be MUCH simpler, and if rates for safety deposit boxes are as low in Korea as they are in my country, a year of rental might be cheaper than 150 pound safe, something I am NOT interested in messing with if I don't have to.

Does anybody... ANYBODY know if banks in Korea offer this service, or what words I'd use to ask for it.

Standard Chartered Bank offers a safety deposit box when you sign up for a certain banking service forgot which one, something like the gold account or something like that. Check them out. I'm sure you can find it.

I asked about renting a safety deposit box when I first came to Korea and was told they're only for VIP account holders. How does one become a VIP member, you ask? By having at least 100 million won in holdings.

No safety deposit box for me. Maybe that's just KB though.

Pretty sure you can get them at Shinahan. The easiest way to find out is to go to your bank and ask!!
