I wouldn't consider myself an anime fan, but I do enjoy a good anime once and awhile. I've seen all the classic movies (Akira, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell, Grave of the Fireflies, et cetera) and I've seen / loved a number of recent movies and TV shows (Metropolis, Paprika, Ghost in the Shell SAC, Paranoia Agent, Serial Experiments Lain et cetera).

But now I find there isn't that much out there for me. I'm not a big fan of cliche anime; it turns me off right away and I can't get into it. I'm also really not a big fan of fantasy. Scratch that, for sake of not wasting time: I hate the fantasy genre as portrayed in anime.

I'm looking for some good dramas, thinkers, thrillers and Sci-Fis to wet my appetite (or a combination of everything). Anime information on the internet has been taken over by fan boys and fan girls and tends to be too oversaturated and esoteric.

Can anyone recommend me something I probably haven't seen? Something with substance?

It would be greatly appreciated.

I saw one recently called "Toki Wo Kakeru Shojo". I'm not sure if it has an English name.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0808506/

It was pretty good. 8.1 on IMDB agrees with me.

Evangelion was a good series, Love Hina and Tenchi are pretty good for laughs. With Tenchi steer clear of Tenchi in Tokyo that thing blows, stick to the OAV's and the TV series. Ranma is also worth checking out it's damn funny and pretty required viewing as far as anime goes IMO.

1) Samurai Champloo (same guys who made Cowboy Bepop) - a kind of hip-hop themed Edo-era samurai adventure series, very good.

2) Furi Kuri - very clever, can't really be described, just download it and watch it...

I was also going to say Bleach - haven't seen it myself but my husband loves it. From the flying swords and energy beams and things that I see on his screen when he watches it, though, it might be in the fantasy genre that you aren't looking for.

I was going to watch metropolis but then forgot. Thanks for the reminder!

Are there any good ones with really nice 3d animation? I remember the final fantasy movie was awesome for that at the time, but I'm not really on the anime/similar scene and haven't heard anything recently.

for the 3d anime i'd recommend:

appleseed
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0401233/

and innocence
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0347246/

for a fucking amazing film of animation

mindgame
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0452039/

also good

tekkon kinkreet

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0831888/

series wise i'm only aware of the usual, ghost in the shell (there is also a 3rd film) series 1 and 2, both are excellent. cowboy bebop and samurai champloo, both are excellent. I've heard death note is sopposed to be good but haven't seen it, I also recommend reading akira, so much more there than the film, they should make it a series keeping to the style of the film.

Cool
