My school recently contacted me after I left (I'm still working in Korea for another company), and told me I had to pay a bill relating to health insurance. I find out that in September, the school counted my last month salary and my severance together, which put me into a different bracket for health insurance and now I owe 95,000 won as payment (even though I already was deducted for health insurance in Sept).
I received my FULL severance (no taxes deducted) in October after I left. The school claims that I have to pay because I received my bonus earlier than their normal 30 days. However, nothing has been said about income tax being deducted.
Is this correct? Do I have to pay? I was under the impression that severance is not taxed and doesn't count towards salary. Plus, this is the first time it's happened at this school (any other time a foreign teacher received their bonus there was nothing deducted, nothing changed).
I asked the accountant at my new school about this matter, and she told me the severance is not to be taxed or deducted. |
