Right now, with the housing market in ruins, America. My parents just bought house in LA. Really inexpensive for what they got. Not even funny what they paid for what they got.

Yes, in some cities, if you are lucky enough to get a decent job despite the bad economy, you can get a big house for $100,000 or less.

Small island resort type places are always good.

in ruins?

not quite.

even with housing prices sagging, in most places houses go for 50% more than just 2/3 years ago. (as opposed to 100% plus before the stupid bubble burst)

difficult question, especially since it's the developing countries that offer the biggest possible reward.. as well as the biggest potential risk.

For Thailand, you need a Thai wife otherwise you're buying a condo which can't even have more than 50% foreign tenants in the compound. You can't own land.

If you're almost dead though, you might consider a 25 year lease of land.

For Singapore, good luck I hope you have a lot of money to spend. I dunno if you've been there or not, but you have to realize beach front property would be expensive in Singapore. Do you think Singapore is a poor country?

Argentina might be good, but I don't know their land ownership laws. Chile seems open to foreign investment.

At the moment you can buy a studio in Dubai for about $90,000 US (prices there are skyrocketing and I think you could sell it in 5-10 years at a huge profit).

you're a good 3 years late on Dubai.

it's (almost) a "sell" right now.

I wish I were American. There are so many beautiful, BIG houses (many with swimming pools) some on river edges, for under 300K. Not NYC area of course but almost anywhere else. I have thought about immigrating to the US simply because of the prices to decently house a family.
Yearly property tax is a little high but.

Philippines. Philippines. Philippines.

Ok, everythning is in my sons' name, and it's way in the south where it's not safe enough to live yet, but we bought at around 10$ an acre. Have picked up additional surrounding land for around 20 an acre. Now sitting on near a thousand acres. Almost 3000 front feet on sea water. I'd like to add another 1000 acres so I can sit in the middle of my property and be almost a mile from the edge. Rice paddies, coconut groves, orchard, flat and hilly forest with a small old growth stand, stream (no fish). Eventually make a farm there, turn some creatures loose to reproduce, build a dock, make a quiet life.

Lat year a friend told me he was going to Argentina. He found a beautiful house in Buenos Aires for around 10,000 USD. I told him to start studying Spanish.

THAT might make sense.

and at that ridiculous price, all the sense in the world. That price seems way too low.

the question as always in such locations becomes..

what are you going to do to KEEP living there? as in what kind of work/job will you have on location?

the answers 99% of the time are most unappetizing.

My grand plan is to have enough passive income that it won't matter whether I work or not.

Your son is Filipino? PH nationality through his mother? If still a minor, OK to put land in his name?

Are these per acre $ amounts for real? Or, are you pulling our legs? And, if your figures are legit, care to tell us how to get similar bargains ourselves? I'd be very interested - salamat! Very Happy
