Hi all!

I won't be leaving Korea for another 9 months but, I was curious as to how people send their belongings back home. I'm not too sure if there are any economical bulk rate shipping methods since a friend and I plan on sending some of our stuff together ahead of time. I was told by a relative who had bought furniture in Korea and sent it back to the USA that the bulk shipping method he used has been discontinued. My friend and I were also planning on buying some antique furniture while we're here so this will also be an important factor in determining shipping method and cost.

Can anyone share any advice on how they send their stuff back to the USA?

THANKS!

Go to the post office...sending boxes slow post isn't too expensive if you're reasonable about how much it should cost to send a box to the other side of the planet.

The cheapest way if you're going home at the same time as your stuff is to buy a couple huge bags, fill them exactly to your airline's weight limit and then pay the $100 extra bag fee. You won't find anywhere that ships 22kg of stuff for that price, and you're virtually guaranteed that it will arrive.

About sending furniture, though....I haven't the foggiest notion.

I tend to send things back to the UK by carrier pigeon.

Obviously there are a few flaws with this because they can only carry small loads, and it can take a while but it is environmentally friendly and they love the exercise!

Thanks for the advice. I hadn't thought about that.

I have also heard that you can ship things "cargo" through your airline...basically you put your crap in boxes, head to the cargo terminal 4-5 hours before your flight, and then the boxes go on the plane at a different rate and you pick them up at the cargo terminal on the other side.

I have never done this, but it would be worth a call to your airline when you do leave to find out what it would cost.

OOO! I have heard of that!!! I think my cousin used that option when he moved back from Japan to the US.
I'm just trying to think ahead and I want to know how much I should limit it myself when buying things here.

anything big and heavy I think is more economical to ship by boat than plane. Cargo on the plane of any real size can be very expensive.

The US post office canceled it's sea mail option last year....so unless you want to buy a shipping container, forget it.

crossmr, have you shipped anything by boat before? Did you go through a private shipping company or did the post office help you?

Yeah, someone mentioned something about that to me last night but they weren't as specific as you. I wonder if there are any other private companies that would be willing the ship a small amount of furniture back to America.

No, just heard about people doing it.

Also keep in mind you're shipping to america, not from america. The US postal no longer accepting Sea mail doesn't necessarily mean you still can't send sea mail to the US. Check the korean postal service and see if its possible to send sea mail to the US.

My friends used this company to send home a bedroom set and boxes of personal belongings. They were very impressed with their service.
