I'm considering asking for that day off, either that or the 2nd of January, another Friday. Can't they just cancel classes and make a 4 day weekend? Ridiculous! |

Absolutely, no classes that day. And the day after New Year's Day as well. The students who might be inclined to stumble in on those days are not likely to be teachable, and chances are the teacher will be off his game as well. Write off those extended weekends. It's certainly what happens in North America. 'Tis the season', and if you can find one Korean who actually lightens up during that period, then you move on to the bonus round. Extend the benefits of your culture at this special time of year; stay home! And encourage your students to do so as well. God knows they could use a break. |

I have xmas day off, then one day on (the 26th) then a whole week off. |

sorry to tell you buddy, but most schools, mine included, would fire, threaten to fire and or blackmail their teachers if they asked for time off when they think that teacher should be in classroom. My school...we have the 25th off and the 1st, not exactly generous of him but my boss is an a__hole like most. One of the many reaosns im leaving korea in june after 3 years. We have 3 canadian teachers at my school and we had a problem with the time the owner wanted us to come in which was 1:30 and we dont start teaching until 3, and we said why are we here so early and not being paid since you are making us be here and has nothing to do with prep time. The answer was follow the rule or you'll be fired, that's the day I decided this was my last year and probably never coming back. My point is...most teachers who "ask" for says off like boxing day, never goona happen unless they are unemployed first. |

Christmas just isn't such a big holiday in Korea as it is where we come from. Same with New Year, really. That's why they only take the 1 day off. |

Yep. I booked it weeks ago. Working on Boxing day would suck. I still have to work untill 10pm Christmas Eve.
When I see the paid holidays the Uni teachers here get it makes me feel like a donkey.....
This is my last year in Hagwons. Definitely. |

Yeah I understand that in the real working world in Korea one day off for Christmas and New Years is sufficient, I guess (but I think 4 days for New Years would be appreciated by everyone)but in a privately owned, small hagwon, why not make it a 4 day weekend? It's just the Korean mentality, let's bring the kids and teachers in and have class but nobody's going to learn anything that day huhuh, but the parents will think they are. |

In the days of lore, New Years was a 1st and 2nd holiday, that is gone now. Chirstmas has never been that big of a deal around here, so even having the day is cool. I will be working on the 26th, and 2nd. |
