My computer isn't actually here yet. I ordered it last night. The only thing I'm worried about is using Windows Vista, as I'm so used to XP, and I've heard so many mixed reviews about Vista. Have a lot of problems been ironed out with Vista by now?

I read somewhere that Vista has some anti-piracy detection stuff on it, and built-in firewalls. Will that affect my bittorrent downloading habit at all?

One more thing: I'll have to install some anit-virus software sometime. Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance for the feedback!

If you want to upgrade the sound to a card, I recommend getting a HT Omega Claro Plus. Great card for a reasonable price. Wink

Once you download all the available updates and new drivers, it should be OK. Once it's stable you can do a back-up over 4-5 DVDs.

The sound on our laptop was terrible at first. Had to use additional speakers.

Last week it stopped playing all sounds!
In DEVICE MANAGER, selected sounds then un-installed driver before updating driver.
Works like a charm now.

Something to keep in mind.
Even though you update the drivers, they still could be faulty/corrupt and not actually replaced.
Try the sound one manually, if you have a sound problem.

Don't worry. Vista is a breeze. It's just prettified XP with a couple more security functions.

I'd be willing to bet that hundreds of thousands of non-techie computer buyers around the world have recently bought a new computer, with Vista, and didn't even notice that the OS has changed.

As long as your computer meets the recommended requirements for Vista should be fine. Make sure you update (SP1) everything like already mentioned. Personally, I prefer XP.

As far as anti-virus goes, I would recommend AVG.

The free version is what I use and is widely regarded as one of the best anti-virus programs to get. It outperforms a lot of the ones you have to pay for.

AVG is bloatware now. Version 8 is the end of that program...it's the new Norton. Avira is the go.

I use Vista, non-SP1 and have no problems. SP1 actually slows the system a touch.

Until you disable UAC (user account control). Then you don't get any pop-ups.

Thanks for the tips guys. When my computer actually arrives, I'll be checking back here to try the things you suggested.

If you bought a Dell, there are instructions on the net about tweaking your machine for optimum performance. It basically improves performance and eliminates bloatware.

But only Dell?

You can tweak Vista...any version, any system, to suit your needs.

No, it's not a Dell, but a Korean brand called Jooyontech. The same brand as I'm using now actually. I was recommended this brand by a Samsung employee of all people and it's been extremely reliable. Not a problem in over three years.

What do you techies think of what I ordered? It's a whole package... 2G ram, 320 gig hard drive, I forget which graphics card but my husband says it's good.... I can't remember really. Plus a 22" wide screen monitor. That was 800,000 (80,000 a month).

Just be aware that some PC games can't actually be played unless the UAC security system is turned off. I had problems with a game but once it was turned off - no dramas.

Fine. Any system including a 22'' monitor for 800,000 is a good deal. But I'm afraid Jooyontech doesn't exactly have a good rep among Koreans. It's seen as the cheap choice. But then, Koreans see anything cheap as poor quality. They don't really recognize the concept of good value.

Thanx for all the advice when I asked about my new computer. It's up and running very smoothly. I even managed to get it to run in English thanks to another thread on this board.

Yeah, a lot of people think that way, huh? I think Jooyontech makes solid computers....like I said, no problem with my previous one in over three years, and this one seems great. I would definitely recommend this brand.
