|
|
I liked some of the early posts in the "the most obnoxious Korean behavior is..." thread, but it strayed and died toward the end.
Here are some more examples;
Part A
- Men smoking in front of children.
- Men clustering in front of subway exits, department stores or any other
building, puffing away like there's no tomorrow.
- That smug "I'm the King of my Castle" look a lot of ajjoshi's smear on
their faces while smoking.
- Moms letting their children pee in public.
- Flies feasting on fresh feces served daily in some neighborhoods by
either A) stray dogs or B) drunk ajjoshis. I'm leaning toward the latter.
- Koreans eye-balling foreigners having a normal human-style
conversation on the subway or bus (they think we are too loud). But
when their phone rings its fine for them to yell and throw their hands
around.
- Korean men spitting on the street left and right.
- Korean men harking 3-5 times in a row only to spit on the street.
- That prolonged harking noise a lot of ajjoshis and ajumas produce when
they get excited or worked up about something during conversation.
- Koren people starting their sentences with 우리나라에서...(means we as
Koreans....
- The concept of "정". Some kind of magical bond between family and
friends that only Koreans understand and only Koreans share.
- Ajumas pushing fliers into your hands even when you try your best to
dodge them slalom-style.
- Korean men bitching like girls. Examples: 아, 배고파ㅏㅏ, 너무추워ㅓㅓ,
힘들어ㅓㅓㅓ..These complaints are often accompanied by 애교. (that
"cuteness" girls add to the end of sentences, most people call it whining).
The list could go on but I'm getting tired... Part B coming soon~ |

I think he means smoking it right by them so that they're inhaling the smoke. |

Why not just change the thread title to "Things I've seen Korean people do"? If you truly find ALL of these things obnoxious, then I fear for you. Perhaps you should try to get yourself sectioned, for your own safety. |

Are you saying you've never gone "Geeze I'm hungry" when worked long hours. Or after work just say "Man I'm tired", or any other such expressions?
Or, it's "Bl--dy hot today"?
Everyone uses such expressions, is your problem then that it's not in English? Or that they use a different tonage to you? or maybe they just say it a little politer and don't say "sh-- it's bl--dy hot out here today".
I hardly count normal human expressions that I've seen in EVERY country I've been to as "obnoxious Korean behavior" or whining.
I think perhaps you need to accustom yourself to the culture a little better, or maybe go back to America/Australia/England (you get the point) where they do the "whining" in English with a little more crude language added for taste.
Also take them as hints of "Let's go eat", "Let's leave now", "Let's not order any more food" and such.
As a language teacher (assuming here) you should be aware of how important such expressions are. |

Most of your list is not uniquely Korean behaviour.

Not unique to Korea.

Sounds like you're projecting here.
- Moms letting their children pee in public.
Not unique to Korea.
- Flies feasting on fresh feces served daily in some neighborhoods by

More shit on the streets in any western city than here.
- Koreans eye-balling foreigners having a normal human-style
conversation on the subway or bus (they think we are too loud). But
when their phone rings its fine for them to yell and throw their hands
around.
Loud English irritates them, loud Korean irritates us.
- Korean men spitting on the street left and right.
Not unique to Korea.
- Korean men harking 3-5 times in a row only to spit on the street.
See above.
- That prolonged harking noise a lot of ajjoshis and ajumas produce when
they get excited or worked up about something during conversation.
How is this obnoxious?
- Koren people starting their sentences with 우리나라에서...(means we as
Koreans....
You've never started a sentence with "In (insert country)..."? I fail to see how this is obnoxious also.
- The concept of "정". Some kind of magical bond between family and
friends that only Koreans understand and only Koreans share.
What's the English word for 정?
- Ajumas pushing fliers into your hands even when you try your best to
dodge them slalom-style.
Not unique to Korea.
- Korean men bitching like girls. Examples: 아, 배고파ㅏㅏ, 너무추워ㅓㅓ,
힘들어ㅓㅓㅓ..These complaints are often accompanied by 애교. (that
"cuteness" girls add to the end of sentences, most people call it whining).
Already tackled by another poster.
The list could go on but I'm getting tired... Part B coming soon~ |

The deal with people movement is nutz, especially in Seoul. People just go all over the freak place. I still don't understand Korean people movement in crowded public places, but there just isn't enough room often times.
When you're walking, other walking Ppople will often draw to you like you're a magnet and get in your way even if there's lots of room. This drives me boozonkers. |

I hear you~
And I agree. Not all of the things listed above qualify as "obnoxious". They are just mere observations. I chose to include the word "obnoxious" in line with the original thread by another user here.
I'm glad some of you have taken the time to point out that some of the things that annoy some of us here are not specific to Korea only, but also occur in the western part of the world.
That's kinda the point of this thread. Feel free to disagree and share you perspective. |

I can't fathom caring enough about this stuff to actually take the time to make an exhaustive list and then type it up and post it online. Do you have any hobbies outside of bitching? |

It is truly the most annoying thing I've ever seen. I would love to know how a city with the population density of Seoul could produce the amount of clueless self absorbed pedestrians that it does. |

Nah, my favorite sport, for the time being, is studying Korean and hanging out with my Korean friends. If you look at the list it's aimed at Korean men (ajjoshis) and ajumas.
I actually find it rather amusing that quite a few of you take the time to read through the list, comment on it and write something insulting
Keep those angry comments coming, they are entertaining~ |

Yeah given the amount of 'stress' Koreans choose to put themselves under I'm surprised at how cool 80% of the young Koreans I've met are.
Elderly Koreans also seem to be good people. But the middle age ones are, as noted, ridiculous and rant-inducing. Less we see of them, the better. |
