So where are people getting the crazy Korean internet speeds from?
I had a Korean friend sign me up for LG's XSpeed, which I've been using for many months now. It doesn't seem that much faster than broadband internet back in the States. Granted, that may be because most of the sites I visit are not in Korea. Nonetheless, I rarely get good ratings on Speed Test and I've seen some pretty high ratings from Dave's posters. In fact, when I measured my speed tonight, I got just under 4MB/s down. Oddly enough, LG's own utility consistently rates my bandwidth at about 100 MB/s down and up.
Is there something faster I should be using? |

Be careful that you're not confusing:
bits (b)
bytes (B) + 8 times as large.
1 KB = 8 Kb
Your connection is 100Mb, so 12.5 MB.
You can't expect to get 12.5MB as others are sharing your connection. 4MB/s is not bad. You'll probably see it peak higher than that at certain times.
I usually get 3-6 MB/s on private torrents...I've never seen higher than 7 and I call shenanigans on people claiming sustained speeds higher than that.
Please anyone correct me if I messed up with my logic. |

I found it to be easiest to measure the average speed by using a download manager to download a number of large files at the same time, basically max out the connections, and measure the time it takes to finish.
For example, downloading (ahem) a movie from Rapidshare which can be 8 parts of 200 MB each (or 100 MB), that's already 1.6 GB. Maybe make it a total of 3 or 6 GB.
My connection (GS Internet 100 Mbps, comes with cable tv that I never watch) normally gets me 25 to 30 GB in 2 hours (I am into 720p and 1080p movies) so that's around 250 MB a minute or about 4 MB/s. I have a little utility that displays the transfer speeds in/out and the values during such downloads are from 1.5 to 6.0 MB/s. I think I could get faster but the connections frequently "chokes", that's possibly a Windows problem.
All in all not bad considering that I get 40-50% of the capacity of the line. |

try www.speedtest.net
When you do the test click on the "Tokyo" pyramid, it's not the "recommended" yellow pyramid, but rather the one right next to it.
I just did a test now (while I was posting) and it shows my speed to be 61megabit/sec. The best speed I've gotten is 91megabit/sec. |

That's awesome!
I peaked at 9850KB/s on that download! Great test.
Free download manager FTW!!! |

1 Byte = 8 bits
1000 Bytes / 1 kilo Byte (kB) = 8000 bits / 8 kilo bits (kb)
1000 Kilo Bytes / 1 Mega Byte (MB) = 8000 kilo bits / 8 Mb
6 MB = 48 Mb
10 MB = 80 Mb
1000 MB / 1 Giga Byte (GB) = 8000 mega bits / 8 Gb
1 bit = 0.125 Byte
1000 bits / 1 kb = 125 Bytes
1000 kb / 1 Mb = 125000 Bytes / 125 KB
10 Mb = 1250 KB / 1.25 MB
100 Mb = 12.5 MB
1000 Mb / 1Gb = 125000 KB / 125 MB
But in actual fact, 1KB=1024 Bytes and not really 1000 Bytes. I'm just rounding off for demonstrative purposes.
Please anyone correct me if I messed up |

Except this bit is useless. Computer don't store anything smaller than a bit. |

Since you haven't seen it it doesn't happen?
You can't really have sustained speeds as things get downloaded pretty damn fast in the 9-10 MB/s range. |

I'm sure lots of people get sustained rates of 9-10 MB/s. Guaranteed they're the same guys who *claim* to have supermodel girlfriends and make 150K Won/h on privates. |

I'll only claim 2 out of those 3. If you didn't get the memo, 175k/h is the going rate for privates these days^^ |

If I get a choice then I'd pick 1 and 3. Supermodels are highly overrated. |
