I've been watching the olympics on our pavv 50 inch PDP and I notice whenever the olympic logo goes past or if the cameras quickly pan past a multicolored background, like the crowd, I notice some pixelization. most of the time the colours and clarity is brilliant but then at other times, when the background is a bit of out of focus and the camera is panning quickly, I notice the pixels and the picture is not so clear. Has anyone noticed this? Is it just my tv or all flat panel screens with this problem.

I have a 50 inch LCD - no problem whatsoever - maybe it's a PDP thing?

I thought PDPs were supposed to be better at faster motions than LCDs. I'm a bit pissed.

Maybe because it's 1080i?

1080i is better for still images although higher in resolution than 720p. Hence why sports are usually displayed in 720p becuase progressive is better than interlaced for lots of movement. I was a little suprised NBC choose 1080i to broadcast it.


Hence why 1080p is awesome, but few if any broadcast channels use it due to bandwidth issues(at least in the USA)....

I just setup a top of the line DLP for my parents and noticed the same thing...it's not present at all on 1080p blu-ray for instance.

hmm. That's food for thought. I've noticed whenever the olympic logo went soaring past. Once while watching the diving. Another time while watching baseball and the fans were banging those plastic noise makers together. One more time while watching a handball game. Has anybody else noticed this.

It's actually something you'll see on every HDTV. The reason is because of the amount of compression/lack of bandwidth on the HD signal on that channel. When lots of movement happens, the signal boxes-up (pixelizes). If they were feeding more bandwidth on that channel, you wouldn't see the boxing/pixelization. Because that big logo is flying fast over the screen, the image degrades. Static or slow-moving shots will look beautiful. You'll notice this problem whenever the signal must show lots of color/video information, such as on a fast pan of the crowd. There was once a big fight scene on a drama with lots of people fighting -- the image degraded so much that the system had to start dropping frames, making the video choppy.

In other words, it's not your TV that's the problem. It's that TV channel (or cable company) squelching the bandwidth too much to make room for other signals. Some TVs are sharper than others, making this a tad more noticeable, but it's a slight difference.

Your PAVV is a good TV. It's the TV or cable company's lack of bandwidth and aggressive compression rations that are the problem.

This is all reassuring. I got a little worried when the second poster said he hadn't noticed any problems. When I first noticed it with the logo I thought that they were not using graphics with a high enough resolution. It's a bit of piss off really since these TVs don't come cheap and when you use to watch something important the lousy picture or signal quality ruin it.

You wouldn't notice pixelization when watching DVDs. It's the bandwidth that's the problem, not the TV. Soon or later they will have to switch to 1080p. Interlacing sucks.
