Did anyone buy a crib or a cradle for their baby here? I heard you can buy western style baby furniture (Changing tables? Playpens?) online. I've never seen anything like cribs, etc. in any stores. I'm going home at the end of summer, and I'm even thinking about shipping stuff via UPS, but I bet that would cost an arm and a leg.

Also, what about cloth diapers, or even a diaper service? Can you buy cloth diapers here? I'm guessing a diaper service is a bit of a stretch, but you never know! ^^

Congrats Periwinkle!

I don't have any websites at my fingertips, but when I get home I'll post the sites my wife uses (in Korean). Everything is possible through the Internet in Korea and there is a huge baby-goods market. There are tons of used baby goods on the net, some of which are brand new (a lot of people receive the same gifts from several people, and then sell one of them at reduced prices).

Also, you might want to bump off a pm to tzechuk - she gave us a wealth of info about buying/ordering things on the net for our little one. Often it's cheaper buying online, too!

One good site to start with is:

www.dawa.co.kr/

I bought a crib and car seat/stroller combo while at home and sent them here surface mail. Even with the shipping charges, it was much less than any comparable products that I've been able to find here.

You can get cloth diapers, but I'm not sure about services. Also, you may want to consider renting a crib. We got a new one for a year (monthly I think it was about $10, cheaper for a year). I live in Daegu, so I don't know about prices in other places. Congrats. Your life is going to be VERY different.
At convention centers there are yearly baby shows. You may want to check into that and you can see what is available in your area.

Due at the end of January! I've also heard it's cheaper to ship via surface mail. Last time I was home I stocked-up on a bunch of stuff from Walmart- even got a 3- in- 1 convertible baby bathtub, but my husband keeps arguing "You can find xyz in Korea, no need to ship from the states." I want to do some price comparisons between buying stuff in the US/shipping via surface mail or just buying imported products from Korean sites on-line. The crib, though- man, that's gonna be a chunk of change either way. Koreans put their babies to sleep on the floor, right? I'm just worried the kid won't stay put once they can crawl- I don't want to wake up in the middle of the night to see my baby sleeping under our bed, you know?^^

Yeah, I'll have to pm Tzechuk, for sure... Renting or buying a used crib is a good idea, but where would you get it?

Hanson, I appreciate your help. My husband hates shopping on-line. I pick out what I want, and he places the order. ^~

same for almost all ather supplies you will need.

Congrats and good luck

I used cloth on Letty for the first three months of her life - because I really wanted to be environmentally friendly.

However, cloth nappies in Korea are pathetic. You won't get Fuzzy Buns here..........

I was going to have some shipped over from home but they wanted to charge a heck of a lot of money for shipping (the nappies themselves would have cost me 120 pounds - about 200 dollars, but they wanted to charge another 60 pounds for shipping!!!!). So we abandoned that idea and switched to disposables.

I still feel a bit bad about that.

Congratulations, Peri. I am sure you will be a great mother.

Haha, that's what I do!

First of all: CONGRATULATIONS!

We bought a crib online in Korea, baby bath too, never used a changing table, just a kind of changing pillow which my mum sent. Pram, car seat we (well, my parents Wink ) bought and my husband happened to have to go on a business trip with a bunch of Korean company managers, and they brought it back to Korea. Must have been a funny sight, a bunch of (mostly middle aged - husband excluded) Korean business men in suits, carrying a car seat, carry cot and baby stroller, plus my husband had a suitcase full of baby clothes and other smaller baby stuff Smile

Cloth nappies are pretty basic here compared to what some friends use in Europe. If you want to go cloth, I really suggest to buy them outside Korea.

Oh, and I agree, Tzechuk is the authority on buying baby stuff online!

(btw, they don't have a lot of real baby clothes in small sizes here, you'll probably have to buy that elsewhere. BUT the newborn shirts with the ribbons they sell here in Korea were VERY convenient in the beginning when you have to change nappies every 2 hrs - they're called 저고리)

Congrats!

As for baby stuff...we ordred some online, we bought most here and had a few items shipped over by cargo.... Very Happy

We used disposable diapers. We tried the cotton diapers and the cotton here is top quality but it became a real chore when our little guy was pumping out dirty diapers at a rate of 10-15 /day!

Volume pushed us to go disposable.

We did not get a changing table. We bought a changing cushion and used an existing dresser as a table.

We got a crib shipped over.

Baby clothes here are great, especially jammies!

We did not buy a baby bath...we used a rubber bassin we bought (same function, much cheaper) and then used our own bathtub after our son was 3 months old (we held him in the bath and bought a support he could rest on).

My mum sent us a stroller she bought in Canada but we quickly switched to the Korean way of jugging our son around as a stroller became a pain in many instances!

Our son is now 1 year old and walking around like a little devil. All the ajumas at the market know him and watch over him when we walk about.

Best of luck!

For a second-hand exchange site: http://myhappybaby.co.kr/home/home.html
The way this one works is you post your goods for sale and get coupons when you sell them. With the coupons, you can then buy someone else's goods for sale.

This next one's apparently a little pricey, but my wife says it's still better than prices in stores:
http://www.esalepark.com/

For baby clothes, my wife has ordered from this one:
http://www.alina.co.kr/

But the dawa site I posted earlier is probably your best bet.

Hope this helps!
