I would commit a crime for some feta cheese.

I would love to have big blocks of it in brine, but that's probably too much to ask.

Preferrably from the Daegu Gumi area, but I'm willing to make a special trip to Seoul.

Anybody?

Costco wins again.

Although, when it comes to European style cheeses I think Hannam Mart in Seoul is the alltime best.

Costco usually has feta cheese. I used to feta cheese at the Costco in Yangjae in Seoul. I haven't looked for feta at the Costco in Daegu. I'm going to go there this weekend, so if I find it there, I will post or pm you.

The feta cheese you will usually find in seoul is in oil with herbs and its pretty gross....

Check hannam market, haddon house or I love cookie for the blocks of feta.
Haddon usually has it. (haddon is located in hannam dong)

(I love cookie is located in bundang and near the hyatt)

good luck. Smile

Excellent. The key word was blocks. Feta in oil isn't usually very nice. Buying a lot is fine too, cause I like it old and aged. Brings back memories of living in Greece.

Costco doesn't have feta cheese. It has something called feta cheese. As someone who was raised on feta cheese, it would not be classified as authentic feta cheese. Why? It doesn't contain either sheep or goat's milk like Canadian, French, Greek, and Bulgarian feta. It would not be accepted as far as I know in Europe to be classified as such. If you want the real stuff the Hannam Market will have it. Frankly, if someone were willing to share the cost of importing Bulgarian feta, I would do it. It is disappointing that there are not Mediterranean stores around here that would stock kalamata olives and feta cheese. Hannam has authentic feta, but I guess the Costco stuff will be close in some ways.
I just don't consider it feta anymore than I would consider an imitation adidas pair of shoes to be adidas. The real thing is the best, but North Americans are not so familiar with cheese from goats and sheep as Europeans are... You could import feta in bulk (Bulgarian) from the internet, I am sure. I haven't done that, because doing it on my own wouldn't be worth it, so I just occasionally go to Hannam and get French or Greek cheese. Canadian feta is also pretty good, but you can't get it here.

That's one thing I miss from being here... There aren't any Mediterranean stores...

Well, I definitely want REAL feta cheese. After having lived for two years in greece, my palate would be insulted to have some other crap on it.
Bulgarian huh? What quantity are you talking about to make it worth it? How much per kilo?
I remember in greece you could buy cans of it. The cans were about five gallons each, and packed in either brine or olive oil I prefer brine.

That much cheese to me would be worth maybe 100,000won.

I was looking on amazon.com. They have feta cheese on there. However, I have no clue if they would ship it overseas. I am sure one of the vendors must. It would be more expensive maybe for you to go to Seoul and get it with your KTX ticket:), perhaps. You can get cheese at a decent price and have it shipped here. I haven't tried it, but it sounds reasonable. If I had a neighbor in Ilsan that was crazy about cheese, I would definitely buy a large quantity and split it, but you don't need to buy a very large quantity. You can spend maybe 50 if you want and then add the shipping.

If you buy Bulgarian do know that it is creamier and saltier. If it is a bit too salty people put it under water a bit to reduce the saltiness.
Another couple of cheeses to look into is Kashkaval cheese which is also Bulgarian and Cypriot Halloumi cheese. Halloumi cheese tastes so good if you put on bread and add oregano or zaatar to it and then have the cheese melt on the bread a bit and then eat the sandwich and have some watermelon on the side. I miss all that stuff:)

"You can buy real feta at Hannam Supermarket. Do you go to Seoul?
I can show you where it is... "

I can come up to Seoul next weekend. The Friday is memorial day. It would be good to pick up some feta and I can see if my wife likes it. It would also be cool to have someone who knows the ins and outs there to maybe show me around the market a little. If she doesn't like feta, then I could choose a smaller tin of bulgarian feta. I would bring my 4 year old along and give mom a rest.

from the website...
Premium Bulgarian Feta in metal tin 14kg (30.83 lbs)
Bulgarian Extra Fine Feta Cheese is a white brine cheese, both creamy and crumbly. It has a smooth, creamy texture, sliceable body, tarty taste, salty and slightly rancid taste. Because it is packed in its salty brine, it often tastes saltier than it shoul

Base SKU:C141
In Stock:Yes
Price: $99.00

Sub Total: $99.00
Estimate Shipping:
Ground ($31.45)
Next Day Air Saver ($123.60)
2nd Day Air ($166.10)
3 Day Select ($74.80)

Wanna go halves on this or the next size down? It would take a month to get here I would think. 30 lbs after brine leaves maybe 20-22.
I can rip through that in a month easy.

They used to have this aged gouda in the hannam deli section that was absolutely amazing and has absolutely nothing to do with feta, but I like feta too. Shinsegae in central city (the bus terminal in gangnam) has a not-terrible selection of cheeses. It's a good location for those of us outside Seoul since we most likely go through there on the way in and out of the city.

Poet13, if you meet up with me next Saturday I can take you to Hannam Supermarket. I had to really dig to find someone who would export Feta outside of the U.S. I saw that you would spend about 70 bucks including shipping on 24 pounds worth of feta if I wasn't mistaken. I can't remember what they have at hannam beyond Greek feta in small quanities. Is your wife Korean?

I just pasted a link to French feta. I wasn't sure I understood the shipping details. It looks like 70 bucks for 24 pounds. If you have a friend in Daegu who wouldn't mind getting French feta you could split the shipping. That company in the link ships to Asia. I am going to buy some feta maybe this weekend.

Have you ever tried Zaatar by the way? That's also awesome. It is a herbal mixture made from oregano, sumac, thyme, and it is good to mix feta cheese and it in olive oil. I love the stuff. My mother is going to send me some zaatar.

I recommend any Dave's user who likes to try different stuff to buy zaatar. You can basically put olive oil in a bowl and dip the bread in the oil and then into the herbal mixture. It's divine. My friend from Newfoundland loved it.
