Originally, I intended to go to Korea last year, but family issues kept me from pulling the trigger. One year later, things are more in place, and I'm once again ready to go for it. But looking around the forum for the first time since last fall, it seems like there have been some significant changes to the process of getting over there and I'll need a bit more than my degree, transcripts and photos.

Have the new E-2 regulations had much of an effect on how long it takes to put together and process the necessary paperwork? What kind of timeframe would I be looking at from the moment I'm offered and accept a position to boarding the plane to Korea?

In particular I'm wondering about the criminal background check. Is that something I should try to take care of now even if I'm not looking to go for another 1.5-2 months? Am I even able to request a background check if I don't yet have an employer who is requesting it?

Thanks!

How long? Two weeks to a month? Longer if your mailing stuff back and forth more than your set of documents for the school to take to immigration to get your visa issuance number.

Yes, get that done and out of the way. It's good for six months and it needs to be with your documents package that you send them. And it needs to be apostillated so that could take from one day to a week to get done.

Go to (or call) your closest cop shop and ask them for the procedure in your local area. In my state ANYONE who ponies up the $10 can check anyone they want. Employers can do it on prospective employees, etc. But you need to request it from somewhere other than online. Korea won't accept an online check anymore. Pay attention to the details because I'm not sure what they want these days. It changes so quickly.

Wario was in Korea less than a month after he was offered a contract that he liked the best.

the sooner you get things done, the better. some states really suck re: getting background checks done, esp. if they are taking it on the chin re: economic factors. not to mention you factor in the general malaise of state bureaucracies, and the fact you have to 1) get the CRC, then 2) get it apostilized by a sometimes different dept, and you can be looking at up to several months.

and I wont even bring in the FBI's check, which is also uber-lengthy.....

and I keep hearing this Wario name, but never see the poster, only his mom. why is that? I think I hear the sound of black ops choppers in the distance.....

All said and done it took me about a month and a half from first contact with my recruiter to getting my notice of employment.... Had all of my documents ready before hand though

If there's any black ops, it'd be Wario regisitered under a different nickname, he'd probably rather remain anonymous in my presence. It's just what I've always called him online. No, I don't think he posts here. He may read though, Dave's is how he found the job listings he applied for.

I was here on this end (stateside) while he dealt with recruiters, schools and job offers, saw the contracts, helped assemble the documents he sent to his school, footed the bill for a 4-day spree in NYC (I didn't think they'd come home), saw him pack, took him to the airport... need I go on?

I know as much about the process from that experience as any recruit. Except I wasn't at the consulate, he went with a drinking buddy, not his mommy.

I put this info of who I am in my location data for everyone to see---wysiwyg. If anyone feels uncomfortable with a mom around, tough *beep*.

(just be careful, you might find me dabbling in psyops from time to time though) Wink

overinvolved mother with too much time on her hands... gotcha! I'm sure he probably loves to be called a Nintendo character's name by his mother on the internets..... who wouldn't? Wink

Sometimes that bird needs to be pushed out of the nest.... sometimes, he needs to be pushed out, given a plane ticket overseas, and pointed in the direction of the red light district in Itaewon. Preferrably with 500,000 won, for the classier birds!

At least I didn't call him Luigi. Wink

Hey Steve, why don't you tell me what YOU know about pushing birds out of nests. PM me if you wish to take this off board.

Make sure they have a parachute?

I'd offer more, but I would need your son's permission. he can PM me with his own S/N. and then there's the fee. we can make it the going rate. Beyond that, youre better off taking it up with a psychologist in your home state. Or better yet, reruns of EMPTY NEST. I would think those would be back in vogue with the death of star estelle getty of the golden girls.

Estelle Getty lived a wonderful and full life. If that means anything, it could mean that you're stuck with me here for another thirty-plus, or however long the good lord sees fit. Because I'll be using any means possible to satisfy my curiosity and need for knowledge (short of hiring you for a shrink).

So if that means posting here at Dave's cafe, so be it. Rolling Eyes

Now go call your loved ones, and let them know how you're getting on. Or if you don't feel particularly close to anyone, don't bother then. Skype to Skype is free, Skype to landlines or cells is only $4.50/month.

I like being helpful and passing on good information, I'm here because I care. I'm here to tell you that the cracks about whores is insulting but I just take it as the level of respect you think you deserve.

If I elbow you in the elevator, it's because I saw your aura and think you are a pissant and you should have taken the stairs. Or maybe just to point out that there's dogshit on your shoes.

Laying it on a bit thick? And I still see no Wario..... perhaps a figment of your imagination.

I have no need to call my family right now, on account I am securely attached to them. Though I wonder what a shrink would label the only blackhawk parent on a forum for expat teachers a half a world away.

(cue for your anti-Psychiatry rant.....)

and maybe Estelle did live a full life...... she still had to face her demons stemming from "Stop or My Mom Will Shoot!"
