I had a new room mate yesterday on such short notice who is teaching a Summer camp at my main school. He said he was here 20 days on the YMCA volunteer program through Chuncheon and his YMCA program director was upset the school placed him with an EPIK teacher instead of doing a homestay with a Korean. I know he's got a bachelors degree, here for Summer camp on C4 visa, he's working for no pay, and staying late doing lesson planning. He moved out while I was at work today and now I don't have my house key anymore so I'm having to leave my door unlocked when I leave. He took it with him this morning with the plan to get it copied today, but when I returned at 6, no word on my key. I seek the key to the answers of all my stupid unexplainable problems. LOL

Now, none of you know where I live so don't get any ideas to snatch my damned computer and shit when I leave in the morning.

What is the YMCA program? I thought it was were you went to lift weights, but that's not what it is in Korea.

The YMCA is like a community center. Yes, they have swimming pools, gyms, etc... Other than those things, they also have a lot of classes. YMCA's in the US will often teach classes like self defense, first aid, swimming, sports, etc.... It is no surprise that the Korean one will have English classes.

I don't want to say cuz some of these other bastards wouldn't have the courtesy to wipe your toilet seat down like I did.

So do I understand this correctly? (probably not ~.*)

They are getting him to teach for free... and they don't even have the courtesy to find him a place to live.....other than expect some fellow waeguk in to shoulder the burden?

I don't know who I should be more upset with at this point. Them for expecting so much or you for allowing this to happen.

But don't let my attitude sour your experience. Wink

I have heard of stories , where Koreans will use the name "YMCA " ,however it isnt authorised by the YMCA.
The reason , Koreans use the name is to get people to work for free. The teachers dont realise that they are being burned.
A few years ago , I met a women who was teaching for the YMCA.She was getting a 1million a month with a korean homestay. She had to pay for her own ticket here and she had to PAY TO APPLY TO THE PROGRAM.

The owners of the fake "YMCA" went as so far to even tell her , that all expats receive the same pay and the same type of homestay program

The YMCA program? It's actually quite big. I've never heard of any foreign teachers being involved.

Yeah, I've heard that the "YMCA" program is classic English-ee edutainment with Korean teachers. Sing some songs, eat lunch, watch some videos and charge the mothers for it. We saw a YMCA group at CGV on Saturday when we saw "Nims Island." None of the kids spoke one word of English-ee, even when they saw us. Usually we get a "Hello" or "How are you?" out of groups of kids like that.

You may even run into some of the YMCA groups at English Village. I know I have. Laughing
