|
|
A new policy was put into action very recently. Unless I have been given the wrong information it came from the Korean Government...
In order to save fuel, only cars with a number plate ending in an odd number can park when the date is an odd number and only even numbers can park on an even number date. This applies to targetted civil servant building cark parks
Admittedly I have seen one member of staff one time come to school by bicycle instead of by car on a day he couldn't enter the school by car but other than that it has, despite good intentions, been a complete failure...
In our school, all the teachers have husbands or wives with cars so usually just use their partner's car on a day they cannot use their own car. Therefore the policy is totally failing. In my case it is worse...
I have a car but my wife doesn't. Parking near to the school but not actually in it is a close to impossible task. Walking is not very realistic as my school is hardly on the doorstep and the particular bus route is not especially frequent and especially after the summer vacation the bus will be full of school children....
All this means that on days I cannot park, my wife has to drop me off in front of the school and pick me up later in the day, actually increasing our car and oil usage!
Something is going wrong somewhere! |

| They are enforcing this on foreigners? I'd say "not in my contract." |

It worked plenty fine during the Olympics and World Cup. |

If you're referring to the 1988 Seoul Olympics I think it is a very different story. I don't think many Korean families had two cars at that time. I'm also guessing there were still a fair amount of people who did not even have one car at that time. I'll take your word on the World Cup.
However, as I highlighted previously, it doesn't seem to be very successful here and now... |

I'll give credit where credit is due. It is a good idea and at least the spirit is there. But it is hard to change people's attitudes. Korea has had 20 good years in the sun as a fairly wealthy country and they don't want to go back to acting poor quite yet.
If companies would also enforce this rule, it would work. But when you limit it only to civil servants, it cuts down on...how much? 1 or 2% of total gas consumption. |

The teachers at my school seem to follow it. (their car in the school car park). The car park is half empty. Some find a spot on the street. some pay 2500 for the day to park in a building and a few actually use public transportation.
경자 are exempt, at my school anyway. I just renewed around the time the policy was put in place. It would be a major hassle for me to use the bus. The school is out of the way. I casually mentioned I wouldn't be able to continue working there if I was forced to use public transportation. |

During World Cup I drove...they had that numbering thing in effect. I never got stopped or whatever and I drove every single day.
Why can't you park in your school's parking lot? WTF? You are a foreigner, you aren't a civil servant and your vehicle isn't a government owned vehicle.
I don't get why they want people to drive less to save on fuel. WTF? They should want people to drive less so that Seoul doesn't look like a carbon monoxide bomb went off and killed the air 80% of the time. |

2 birds with 1 stone. But somehow Koreans' reason for everything ends up being the almighty won.

Half the time people are on here screaming about how they are treated differently, now if you are being treated the same but it is not a benefit it is ok to pull out the foreigner card? You have been here since 2003, I am guessing that you are now an F5, that should make you pretty much Korean. |
