Hello.
First of all, I am not a newbie to Korea. However, I have never gotten an E-2 visa before.
Recently, it came to my attention that the E-2 visa laws have changed to allow people with two years of college to come and teach here. Before you get all elitist and flame me, read on for my qualifications...
Here are my qualifications:
- As of the end of this month, two years of college
- Certificate of Completion from Yonsei University Korean Language Institute in Seoul (1,200 hours of Korean language study).
- CELTA from the IGSE in Dunchon-dong.
- Lived in Korea for over four years (in case you're wondering how that was possible when I'm only 21, my dad was a diplomat and we were stationed here).
- I'm 21 and American and, since employers DO care, 100% foreign appearance.
Here are my questions:
1. Is the new E-2 visa change only for crappy areas like most of Gyeonggi-do (such as Guri), or are the fun locations like Jeju-do open, too?
2. Will I have to fly back to the United States and then come back to Korea?
3. What kind of criminal background check do I need? Do I have to get one from the FBI, or are others acceptable? |

Your qualifications are not important to me. If you are willing to accept the pay for the TALK program, it is your call. I am not even in Korea yet, but I can answer your questions. Some research would go a long way if this is something you are serious about. All of this information is available. At any rate, I will do my best....
1. The E-2 visa regulations are a mandate of the government. As such, they would apply to anyone applying for such a visa. Your question is like asking if there is a different process to get a visa for San Francisco vs. California. It would be insanity to implement such a policy. A little common sense goes a long way.
2. Well, you need to get the proper visa. I don't know about the TALK program, but usually you will need to have an interview at the embassy/consulate in your home country. For those of us that have a four year degree, it is possible to have your degree verified in Korea and obtain a visa in a third country. I would assume this to be true for a two year degree. I would ask the TALK people about this. They may not know about this option as the information is not widely disseminated. Either way, you will need to do some sort of visa run.
3. As it stands now, you don't need the FBI check. A local or state one will do. An online check isn't going to work. Depending on your state, you might need some prints taken.
Good luck, and let people know how it goes if you decide to go through with it. |
