10 months ago my wife gave birth to our baby son. She is now staying at home to take care of him. Spending a lot of time at home alone with the boy has been difficult for her at times.

We went back home to Canada last month, and purchased a slingbox. Hook it up to a cable box and a router and you can stream the cable to anywhere in the world you have internet. It cost $250 plus tax, but has been one of the greatest purchases I have ever made. I know get over 200 channels. No more AFN for me. Very Happy

Here is the link. http://ca.slingmedia.com/

can people share the cable box? I mean, if I have it at a friends house, can we both watch different channels at the same time?

Yes you can, but, you need to get the Slingbox Pro, and I believe the cable box needs to have a digital output. Then you will need to also buy an HD cable. What might be easier is to splice the cable at your friend's place and put another cable box there. That is what I did at my mom's house. I didn't hook a TV up to the cable box and slingbox.

Let me know if you have any other questions. On the slingbox website there is a customer service line that works as an instant messenger. They might be able to answer more than I can.

I heart my slingbox!! I bought one and had it hooked up to my folks TV back in the states. It is soooo nice having the Daily Show, Oprah, Colbert, Cspan, all my fixins Tivo'ed to come home and watch after work or if I'm feeling bored.

WHY would someone pay monthly for basic cable here when you could just get a slingbox?

From looking at their website a few months ago, I got the impression that there was a monthly service charge in addition to the initial purchase.

I think it was like $70, but I guess that might be particular cable packages that they sell along with it ...

Can somebody explain what the deal really is?

TV series can easily be downloaded and sports viewed live online in this age of the internet.

Besides access to public TV, local programming and live broadcasts as they happen, I don't see any other benefit.

Whomever has a slingbox over here has way too much time on their hands.

I actually miss not having AFN anymore in my area because I was hooked on watching its trifecta of evening talk shows - Leno, Letterman, and Ferguson - at the end of the day.

And it seems like some of the major networks (most notably NBC) no longer let their archived programs available on the internet be downloaded outside the U.S. (or maybe just not in Asia)

Invest in a basic inexpensive PC and hook up your apartment to the internet. Cable and internet packages are to be had. I pay 45,000 for both but foreigners usually pay more than their Korean counterparts.

Mininova is your new best friend. The world of torrents at your fingertips.

Just go there and do a search.

Slingbox has a Korean partner now and you can buy their equipment here. I don't remember the name, but a simple google search should work.

I have one setup and its great to have.

I paid the $250 for the slingbox and that is it. There is no monthly service fee, although wherever you hook it up, obviously that person will have to pay for the cable package. I am guessing that the fee you saw was inlieu of a cable package. BTW, I still get AFN. I have the digital cable package, and they have yet to remove it from there, although they did remove it from the regular analog package. SHHHHH! Don't tell the DOD.

Matthews_world, I have downloaded shows, even purchased many TV series in Yongsan. A lot of times, I don't really have the desire to wait around for the shows to download, plus, sometimes it is really hard to find the shows I like, such as programming from TLC, Bio, A&E, Showcase. And yes, my wife does have a lot of time on her hands now because she is staying at home with our little son. We are homebodies. Been here 6 years, and have seen most of Seoul. We don't do the bar scene. Too old for that, plus I would hate to play with my son whilst drunk or hungover. Different strokes for different folks.

You don't need to pay $250 for a Slingbox. You can download free programs that work on your home computer the same way as a Slingbox.

They're great if you leave a computer at home (and have a $40 TV tuner)

The diversity and availabilty of shows one can download is quite limited. I should know I download most of what I watch.

I think the point people are trying to make is Slingbox is UNLIMITED ACCESS to TV programs just like your watching from your home country.

Also, staying home and watching TV helps you SAVE MONEY. Going out often will burn a hole in your wallet very quickly.

I was just checking out one here.

http://www.amazon.com/Sling-Media-Slingbox-AV-SB240-100/dp/B000IVDTSG/ref=pd_bbs_sr_2?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1216608449&sr=8-2

However, I imagine you have to plug it in here. Do you have to buy an adapter?
