Non-BBQ Korean food recommendations?

I know I like Soon-du-bu, and Bi-bim-bap. I also like Dwea-jan-ji-gae and Kim-chi-ji-gae is also nice.
I would like to learn about a few more good dishes though; try some new things.

Heres the problem. I really dont like Korean BBQ of any type. Its not a health issue, Bul-go-gi could be the healthiest food on the planet but I still dont like it. I just prefer meals with a little meat in the food, not a meal of meat. Again, not a health thing, just what I like.

So last week I went out with two K-friends and they ask me what I like. Since I was wanting to try something new, I just said anything at all, except not one where they bring red meat and you cook it at the table. Well, one of them gave me a look like I just insulted his grandmother. The guy was pissed through the whole dinner; which, unfortunately, was Bi-bim-bap (nothing new).

So, I dont think I will phrase it quite like that again. Maybe better if I give suggestions of things that I do like. But, I am at a loss since I want to try new things.

Can you suggest some Korean dishes that fit these criteria:
- No red pork or beef brought and cooked at the table (again, not about health, just my preference)
- No raw fish
- No squid or mussel (cooked or raw)

I never thought of myself as a picky eater. None of these things ever came up once growing up. They just seems rather more prevalent here than at home.

Thanks, Drew

Samgyetang. Chicken & ginseng soup. Delicious. Maybe the best Korean food there is.

What about all the noodle dishes? eg. jjanjangmyeon, naengmyeon, etc. I'm a fan of a nice cold bowl of bibim naengmyeon on a hot summer day.

Actually most basic Korean meals at a restaurant are simple soups and rice which should fit your needs. Getting grilled food for every meal can get a bit greasy. If you don't mind a beef broth soup then sulleong tang and kalbi tang are both simple non-spicy beef broth soups. Samgaetang as mentioned before is just chicken soup with the whole chicken. There are alot of basic foods for Koreans that are good it just takes a bit of finding to do.
The thing is that if you're going out for dinner with a group these foods don't seem that popular but for lunchtime they are way more common than eating grilled meat.

Shocked If your idea of the best Korean food is a big bowl of bordom with a serving of predictability on the side. Wink

If you aren't a big meat eater you might try some of the Buddhist restaurants or some good Chinese restaurants may offer a bit more variety.

Gamjatang - Potato Stew

There is meat (pork) in it, but it's well cooked, and the soup left over at the end is the best thing in the world.

Chinese Restaurants and jjanjangmyeon sound good.
Not sure what naengmyeon is, but sounds like something to try (not those cold noodles is it?)
Gamjatang sounds great too!
Wow Thanks for the ideas!

Can I get more info about those "Buddhist Restaurants"; sounds like worth trying!

probably the easiest Buddhist places to find are in Insadong... i've been to sanchon a few times and always enjoyed it. a bit pricey, but good value if you're really hungry and looking for something a bit special, plus, really cool food and 100% vegetarian. sosim is good and pretty similar. i've always had good luck with vegetarian buffet places, but i don't live in seoul so i'm not familiar with too many there.

Jia Jiang Mian is good, bibimbab is good, wait... it's almost all good...
but those two are good, some say bibimbab is hot, but I don't find it hot at all, so I guess if you can't eat things that are a little (almost not) hot, then maybe it's not for you, but there's asia for you. =)
