Can anyone suggest a useful and basic English grammar book? I need something to use as reference and help me plan lessons.

I like the Grammar Bible. I have that book. The author is also humorous. I have heard of Azar as well.

I guess it depends on how basic you want it to be...and how many books you are thinking of investing in.
Whistle Blower's list is quite good...and a fair indication of having taken the Celta course.

If you are just interested in one book at this stage....then...I would strongly suggest:
The Grammar Book - Marianne Celce-Murcia, Diane Larsen-Freeman.
It goes into depth on some very useful esl areas.

If you are willing to get a second book....then
Practical English Usage - Swan(This may be more of what you want if you are just interested in the basics)

These two are a great combination.
I have a fair number of grammar texts..but i use these two by far the most.

Thanks everyone! I appreciate your advice. I just need some basic ones to start with, so I ended up buying

"Practical English Usage" by Swan
