What is your fav. Olympic moment? Who is your biggest Olympic hero?

I still tingle when I watch Billy Mills go down the home stretch and take the gold.......

Here's a presentation I just completed. Can you name these Olympic heroes? How many can you name? I'll post up the answers on Monday. (hit the arrow key to start the presentation)

Lots of resources and I'll be putting up more -- for teaching the Olympics at EFL Classroom 2.0 . It's a great teachable moment.

olympic and world records will always be broken but there is one moment that ill always remember.

1992- derek redmond of great britain running a preliminary rd (or semi...i forgot) in the 400m dash. about 1/2 way thru, he pulls up lame and is lying on the track. he gets up,hops and hobbles his way down the final 200m. handlers and track workers are encouraging him to just walk off the track or offering to give him assistance. he declines and is in obvious pain. then his father shows up out of the crowd tells him to slow down and they complete the lap together arm and arm, with the younger redmond weeping.

he didnt win a medal...or make it to the final. but he should everyone what the olympics really mean.

It's a cool video, but I wpon't use it for teaching. If the athlete is Korean, my students will know him/her, and if not, they'll just say 'I don't know'.

Slightly less classic is the "dream team" cloaking themselves in American flags at the Gold Medal ceremony for basketball...... to hide the reebok (or other) logo to keep their own cozy deals with Nike on the straight and narrow.

1984 Summer games- McDonalds gives food away bases on US medals- and the Soviet Bloc all pretty much pull a no-show. talk about a free junk food summer......

My buddy getting punched in the head by some Indian and going down in the second round of his first fight.

Not the greatest moment, but the most personal.

When I lived in Montreal, I liked all the APCs in the downtown. (The games right after Munich.)

When I lived in Seattle I really enjoyed the Australian games. I was Canadian. I was living in the USA. I visited Korea a couple times as a tourist and had a couple Korean friends. My symphony going partner in Seattle was a Japanese woman.

So I could cheer for four teams. It was pretty fun.

You'd probably be best using the Olympic Sports presentation I made. Find it on the main page of EFL Classroom 2.0. But you could use this one -- just ask students to state the sport of the athlete, which games or Nationality/language. Make it a game. The ppt has end slides with the information on each athlete , games, nationality. Get the powerpoints in the Resources area.

Here's the completed presentation with the name of each athlete.

My other fav. Olympic moment is Ali, standing there with the Olympic torch -- a message of both our strength and frailty -- time has us all in her chains....

My olympic hero is Derek Redmond in Barcelona in 1992 - you would need a heart of stone not to be moved by this.

Ben Johnson winning gold in 1988. I was such a proud, multicultural, idealistic adolescent Canadian. It really helped set me on a path towards reality re: international sport. Thanks for the disabuse, Ben.

Jim Craig looking for his Dad in the stands with the American flag draped over his shoulders. I was 6 years old and I still remember it like it was yesterday.

Nadia in Montreal '76. I was ready to defect to Romania. Kristi Yamaguchi was quite nice.

But 'the Miracle on Ice' in 1980 was the best. It was during the hostage crisis and the USN flashed the score to the Soviet Navy in the Persian Gulf by Morse Code.

Wait to see the Korean coverage of the Olympics. I think 장미란 made the team. If you don't know her.....you will.
