So it seems Google must have sent someone to every street in every major city in the USA, even quiet suburban streets, to take a picture about every 20 yards. Then stitched them all together and put it online!
I can't imagine the effort this must have taken. And, of course, this is just the start. I'm guessing they won't rest until every street in the world is done.
Are Google obsessed with the accumulation of data?
I mean, I think it's really cool. If you're from the States you can now virtually walk around your neighborhood, at street level. Start from outside your house. Walk down your street. See the homes of people you know. See the local Quick-e-mart. Walk around to your old school. Maybe even see people you know!! Or even their cars.
It's fantastic, but I worry about the absolutist kinds of minds who would want to do this.

Make sure the streetview button is on. |

These days digital photo's can add information on the lattitude and longitude of the actual picture taken.
So it's just a DB operation where you take the best possible pictures and connect them |

Google Street View is considerably more involved than just connecting existing photos using GIS data. Google has been sending out specially-equipped vehicles to take 360˚ panoramic photos on city streets.
