Can any one recommend a good Chinese Character Book for learning the Chinese characters. I'm not really interested in learning the Chinese language yet but I would like to study the characters. Also if anyone knows of any good websites to help learn Chinese characters it would be appreciated.
Thanks |

I'd like a good book too, but on Hanja characters and their application into Korean. A korean book would be ok, though one with English and Korean would be a nice find... |

This is the book I've been using - I highly recommend it. It doesn't give a lot of space for practice, but a 500 won practice book like the ones the students here use will solve that problem. The thing that makes this book great is that it is written for people who are learning Korean!

Great book, but would be nice if I could even join the site to purchase it, as it doesn't accept foreign IDs! |

I have news that will make you happy, then. I originally found (and purchased) the book in a little bookstore not far from my house (so I imagine it is not hard to find, esp. in a large bookstore). I searched for it online today and posted that site so that people would have something to look at. I suppose just giving the title would have been enough, but I'm a visual person. Sorry for the confusion. |

Thanks for the suggestion. I went to Kyobo (Daegu) today to find it but I can't although it is on their website so I will just get my g/f to order it from there for me.
Thanks a lot. |

I have an excellent book called 'Chinese Characters in Pictures' by Wang Chung. I got it while I was in Beijing for about 2,000 Won, new! I highly recommend it, the publisher is sinolingua but I don't know if you'll have luck getting it in Korea.
I found it particularly useful because it associates images with each of the Chinese characters and briefly goes into the origin of how the Chinese character evolved. This is interesting even if you aren't particularly interested in learning the Chinese characters themselves (also helps you remember the meaning of the symbols). As Chinese characters are often visually similar to the objects they represent, the pictures are a good learning aid.
The URL is too long to post here, but if you search on amazon for 'chinese characters in pictures' it's the first book in the results. |

This is the book I used.
I highly recommend it. I learned 300 characters in six weeks. It was so engaging I would lock myself up for an hour each weeknight to study 2-3 chapters.
P.S. Are you talking about the Kyobo in downtown Daegu? That's exactly where I bought my copy of 'Learn Hanja the Fun Way.' |

Yes I am talking about the Kyobo downtown. I had a look in the English book section on the second floor that has all of the books for learning Korean and couldn't see any books on Chinese characters.

for japanese, there is a book that is called "kanji pictographics"
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/0962813702/billpellowe
it breaks the chinese character down piece by piece.
there's another one that tells a story for each character, but i don't know the title.
as far as i can see, the characters have almost identical meanings in korean, but different (often very similar though) korean readings. these books may help you.
6 months into my japanese sojourn and i can read/write 120 chinese characters... it's a tough battle, but it's fun. |
