I like to work out and stay in shape, so I was curious if anyone know how the gyms are Seoul? Is there a 24-Hour fitness? Do they basketball courts? Are they pretty much the same? thanks.

gyms in korea in general are not up to the standard of the u.s. i've never heard of one having a basketball court. it sucks cuz the price i paid for a membership here got me old equipment, and it was small. at home for the same price i got an indoor running track, basketball court, pool, new equipment, etc... i guess it depends on your area too. there are ones that have newer and nicer equipment, just go check a few out.

I personally like a gym where everyone minds their own business, it's clean, fairly priced, and equipment is diverse and ready to use. So far, in Korea, been to 3 different gyms and they're all perfect.

Enjoy the gym. Korea's a great place for working out indoors.

if your looking for:
good bars
oly/powerlifting platform
power rack
squat rack
bumper plates

you wont find them in this country unless you goto sap gym.

Otherwise, as far as weights go in terms of machines and what not you will be fine.

Any runners or cyclists that can give advice for exercising in Seoul? When I've lived in large cities before, I've had difficulty finding places to run that are convenient to get to, except for indoor tracks which are terrible imo. What about swimming?

If you're in Seoul, you can check out the Han River. They have running areas and cycling areas on both sides of the river. I'm not quite sure on the distance, but it seems fairly long. The only gyms that I've been to have decent machines but the free weights are lacking. The heaviest dumbbells that I saw were 20kg which should be fine for a lot of people but lacking for those who lift heavy.

What is a really nice gym in Seoul? I'm willing to pay a decent amount each month if it helps me stay healthy and keeps me in shape.
Can you get memberships to hotel gyms? I was looking online at the Shilla Seoul, and it seems they have a beautiful pool and exercise room.
I wouldn't mind paying $50-100 a month to have daily access to a really nice gym area like that.

Most Korean gyms that would be considered "lousy" by US standards charge $100 USD per month...so I'm pretty sure the Shilla is not going to let anyone in for that amount

I dunno about the Shilla, but when I lived in Suwon, I inquired about signing up at the gym of a brand-new Ramada hotel. There was no monthly membership, the minimum package was a 6-month for over 1 mil. That's a little over $150 a month. They also had a yearly membership that exceeded 2 mil.

It was a super-nice facility, and I was a little tempted... but as I had less than 6 months left on my contract at that point, there was no way it was even close to being worth it. They absolutely would not budge on the 6-month minimum membership.

You'd have to inquire at the Shilla, but it wouldn't surprise me if they had a similar setup.

Surely you can find something ultra modern and more Western in Seoul, but maybe not in the smaller cities. I live in a city of about 150,000 and we only have 1 small gym centrally located. It's small, crowded, stinky, and dirty with only 1 elliptical and 4 treadmills. Their is one rack of free weight dumbbells and some cable tension machines, but it's too crowded and costs 70,000 a month. I walked in there to take a tour of it and 10 minutes was all I needed to vote with my feet. Even if it's cold, a brisk walk and use of a pair of dumbbells is better than nothing and it's super cheap. There is another nicer gym, but it's a 1 hour hike each way or 7,000 won tax ride so it's not practically located yet I live in a city center, the old part of town. I guess we can't expect world class fully Westernized living amenities in some small country unless in a 5 star hotel in the capital city. The US Army calls their 1 year Korea tour of duty a hardship tour due to people generally finding it to be an unpleasant inconvenience when it comes to living amenities and quality of life.

Do most gyms require monthly membership, or can you just pay for a day?

I seen an ad that the gym in Hamilton hotel in Itaewon allows you to pay by the visit, but I know that's not commonly an option in regular gyms as the Hamilton is catering to Westerners on short business trips.
