|
|
Last night, two friends of mine and I were in Bucheon for the film festival. We saw a man beating his wife on the sidewalk right near city hall. He was punching her, slamming her into the wall, she was putting up a fight as well, but he was laying into her.
What really baffled me was that loads of people were just standing around watching, and nobody was doing anything, just standing around. I know that if you get involved, you can risk having the consequences shifted onto you, especially if you are a foreigner. I don't care, I told the man the best I could in translated English "Woman, punching, not okay."
He stopped and looked at me. My other friend started to make fun of his man boobs because she had ripped his shirt completely open. That really pissed him off. Still, he went back to hitting his wife, so another man comes around the corner, get's really close, takes a look, shrugs his shoulders, then wanders off. Nothing.
Honestly, how do you tell a man in Korean properly, to stop beating the hell out of his wife? And why don't people get involved when clearly, someone needs help? Instead they just stand there and watch. |

1. Call the police.
2. Start filming with your cell phone.
Other than that, getting personally involved is a bad idea.
But if you really want to know, "Ha-ji ma-say-oh" means "Don't do that!" in Korean. |

Happens all of the time here. No matter what you do you will be a "bad guy" and the woman will happily return to her husband. The woman is the one who needs to leave the abusive spouse.
In other words, "Forget it Jake, it's Chinatown."
I suggest some of you see some older movies. In 1974, a movie called "Chinatown" won academy awards and the last line in the movie is-
[last lines]
Walsh: Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown

Making a video of it is the best way.
Keep saying 'internet video' with a slight K accent and he will have to stop.
hahahah, your friend made fun of his bitch *beep*. It's fitting. |

Right. If nobody's about, a couple of kidney shots ought to do it. He goes down pissing blood, and you go home an honorary Samaritan.
Good times. |

Exactly right. If you even touch the guy you can be prosecuted. There are many stories about interventions that end with the woman taking sides with the husband once the police show up, so the woman you try to help becomes a lying enemy.
The 2nd answer is "a baseball bat" if no one is around and you can get away without police involvement. |

Call the cops.
They won't do anything... except for the fact there's a waygook looking. The 'argument' will continue out of sight of the foreigner and she's going to get it even worse because you have caused a national 'loss of face'. |

Come to think of it, I remember an article on Marmots Hole or KoreaBeat a few months ago about a Korean guy who was posting a story like this. He intervened when he saw a woman getting abused by a guy in front of a store, and not soon after cops showed up and saw them arguing/fighting. Suddenly, the woman changed the story and said the Samaritan had said rude remarks to her and touched her inappropriately, and her boyfriend stood up for her, and that's why they were fighting. Then a bunch of people streamed out of the store (their friends) and backed up the couple's story, about the Samaritan being a stalker/pervert.
That's when the Samaritan realized this was a scam and he was caught. He paid the blood money to make it go away and posted his story on Naver so others would know.
So I stand by my original advice. Don't get personally involved. |

Korean dudes like to beath their old ladies. And their old ladies like to get beat. Otherwise they'd leave the guys. It's not like a guy goes from prince charming to wifebeater in a single night...not in a country without good whiskey, anyways.
And people on this board like to bring it up every 3 weeks, because it makes us feel superior to Koreans even though we can't walk around at night in most of our cities back home because they're so unsafe. Really, they're doing us a favor in that respect.
I encourage anybody who encounters such a situation to jump in like the white knight and beat the guy up. I have no doubt that you will be hugged and thanked by the woman, congratulated by the police, and given the key to the city. And, really, you're a p*ssy if you don't do it.
If you see a guy beating a woman, immediately start beating him up! It will solve all of the woman's emotional problems and you will be rewarded! Trust me! Don't be a coward! |

Me too. I've always wondered how guys on this board seem to see a beating every week. I've been here a few years, and have yet to see a man beating on a girl. I've seen numerous gals punching and swinging their purses at their guy though. |

I was peace officer in Canada (DFO/Coast Guard) and the last thing you want to do (especially in K-land) is get involved in a 'domestic'.
I don't know why, but 80% of the time an abused woman will 'turn' and protect her partner... to the point of physically attacking her 'rescuer'.
In K-land it's even worse... stay out of it... assuage your conscience by calling the cops and let them not deal with it. |

Taking pictures seems to be the best bet without getting involved yourself and making a bad situation worse (at least for you). at least that way if he attacks you, you can have the photo of him rushing you before you knock his block off. |

Don't? Seriously, only thing that's gonna happen is you're going to look like an intrusive *beep*. Or worse yet, embarrass him in front of her and he beats her even more. Let her and her own deal with it.
And yeah like another poster said, given I've only been here a couple of years but I've never once seen a guy beating his girlfriend or wife. I gotta wonder how many of these stories are made up.
Thanks for the newest blog update! |

All of you saying "do nothing"/ "it will be worse for you" are speaking from personal experience I take it?
