so, i was out with my GF and about 4 of my friends. we had kalbi, drinks, a good night after a long day. my GF and i are about to turn in when she says she has to go to the bathroom, same direction 3 of my friends just went (1 went home). we pass the entrance to a night club that my friends decided to go to. they would not let them in because they were foreigners. period. me, my friends and my GF had words with the doormonkeys , one of them turned into 4, words became louder, turned into shoves and blows, one of my friends is down, the cops show up. my friend gets taken away, i had to restrain my GF so she would not be taken too, i was very close myself.
i have to ask, what year is this? and korea is the hub of what exactly? |

Hey, same thing happened to me. But I was out with my korean co-workers, one jazz dancer from the states(he was black) two Canadian guys (big, tough looking) A Canadian girl, and an older English guy. We went to a club about midnight in Pusan, and these mafia guys let the women in and stopped the guys at the door. The bouncers were all over us, kept saying "beautiful, very beautiful" and so we get inside and still no guys. We go back outside and find out that for some strange reason the men can't come in. Sure, the guys were angry, but we did'nt want trouble, and just went across the street to some hof and spent about 200,000 won on beer and side dishes. I figure it was their loss. My co-workers later said something about the bouncers telling her that the korean girls were being "touched" by foreigners in the past, I guess the bouncers can touch white girls and it is okay.

Sorry iain77, but you and your friends were in the wrong. If the place doesn't want to let foreigners in, tough luck. It's called a free society. Private business owners can do what they want, until Korean decides to get all PCized and capitulate to UCLA sociology professors.
I've been denied access to a club before for being a foreigner. I called the bouncers a name in Korean, because that's obligatory, and then I left for another place. Not a big deal. Standing around, starting a fight? Mind-numbingly retarded. |

I'm sure fighting with the doormen vividly demonstrated the error of the club's policy of not admitting foreigners and that now the club will actively encourage others of us to patronize the place. Thanks a bunch for standing up and representing us so well. |

The kind of places that often prevent foreigners from entering, are usually exactly the type of Korean places that you do not want to go to (booking clubs etc). |

i agree, those places do suck. they aren't worth going into. i wasn't the one who was trying to enter. and in retrospect, i would say that my behaviour was pretty dumb, but what is "mind-numbingly retarded" is the racist behaviour at the core of the issue. |

Agree starting a fight may have been a bit OTT, although we've all felt the rage when faced with the situation, but on the other hand you have to realise the flip side to the 'free society' is the right to call such a place on their bull****.

During college I spent many years working in the bar industry (doorman, bartender) and I was constantly amazed at the numbers of people who thought that fighting with the staff was a sure fire way to get admitted into the bar.
What did you think you would accomplish by fighting with the doormen? That they would stop and see the error of their ways and decide that you would be good to have?
If people are rude before they get into the club it's almost guaranteed they will be the same when they are inside.
If you were here in the old days, there were bars in Itaewon that said "No Koreans allowed." There were also bars that banned GIs. So this is a two way street. |

that stuff is infuriating but look at it this way:
name one club that's worth going to that doesn't let foreigners in.
it's only lame booking clubs and ajosshi clubs that don't let foreigners in. you probably saved yourself from from buying an $80 fruit platter. |
